I don't think LawOpen has a website -- it's a mailing list. (Maybe it does? Maybe a site where you can manage your membership/subscribe/unsubscribe?)

But yeah, go filter those emails into a new folder. SRSLY. It'll make your inbox utterly unusable otherwise.

I haven't gotten my lawopen subscription yet. How do you know when you're subscribed, and how can you get onto it?

I got an email that says I am subscribed and a flood of emails. So I guess you know when your mailbox is bombarded with emails that start with "[lawopen]" ... It's a bit nicer once you set up filters.

One more night of fun tomorrow, then it gets real...

Dominicks/LC party/Ricks were fun tonight. Hoping tomorrow is more low-key, with some reading thrown in.

I feel like the semester has already started. I have a research project (for moot court), a deadline of tomorrow, and I'm seriously procrastinating.

Since this seems to be a concert-oriented group, is anyone interested in going to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band? They're playing in Auburn Hills on Nov 13...

So does anyone know if the admissions people actually try to sort new students into sections based on their ability/personality? (I just read the Every Fucking Gunner Here/I'm Just Kinda Lazy/Most Nights Out Partying thing in that little booklet.)

From what I know about last year, MNOP was basically the public interest section.

I also believe they had hte highest quantity of darrows.

I think, and I'm not certain, but I'm fairly sure that's a joke. :D

Otherwise we have a school full of bad students.

I think they definitely do try to divide up the sections in certain ways, balancing them out so that there isn't a "hard" section, trying to get people with different life experiences, etc. And it also seems like they do sometimes put people from certain groups together so that they get to know one another, if they are particularly small minorities in some respect. Like my 1L section had all (3) of the fall starter black men and also a disproportionately huge number of the Mormons, older students, married people, and gays.

I'm sure they do not divide them up by trying to figure out who is most likely to stay out partying most nights, be a gunner, or be boring/lazy.

Anyone not get their loans direct deposited into their account yet? I signed up for direct deposit, and they said we should've gotten the $$ yesterday, but it still hasn't shown up in my account...

IMO there's no point in trying to decipher which section has what or who is going to do well. Even of the gunners I knew last year, maybe 1% of them had the grades you somewhat intimidatedly thought they would have. When it came down to it, the people I know with the 4.0+s were super-quiet, super-awesome, really friendly people who wouldn't for the life of them want to tell you that they have those grades (but you know they do because you can find their name on the book awards listserv).

And what's even freakier is that, in my opinion, there's nothing you can do about them. Sure, if you put in the work and study intelligently, it's possible you'll get straight As/A-s, maybe even mostly As and one or two A-s. From what I've seen, though, the straight A+s/As came from people who gave no impression–at least to me–that they were in the library until 2am every night. It just ostensibly came from natural ability (a friend of mine is as bewildered as I as to how he/she got his/her grades). To those people, IMO, exam-writing and lawschool-prep just come naturally. In fact, I don't think I knew a single A+/A student who I felt slaved at books for hours on end. It makes me feel pathetically stupid that I work harder and still can't do as well, but also honored that I get to work alongside such intelligent people.

There surely aren't more than 2 or 3 people who got straight As and A+s, so I don't think you can generalize too much.

Hmm.. you'd think that the fact that the set is smaller and the fact that you probably know all of them would allow you to make a pretty good generalization.

Except that the set the generalization is being made about is 4.0+s students in general (since we are talking about predicting next year), not the few students who happened to do well that year.

Suppose I also know 4.0+ students at other schools, that would surely make the generalization stronger, wouldn't it?

And don't dismiss that as implausible. In fact, friends at other schools are more willing to divulge their grades because you're not in their class.

Just sayin, Austin Powers. If you open your mind up a little, the possibilities are endless!
