(god, the December snow fiasco drove me absolutely insane).
+1 -- the snow and sickening bitter cold right around Christmas broke me.
The Seattle snow? I couldn't have cared less about the snow/cold--it was the lack of snow cleanup and having to put chains on my tires to drive IN THE CITY that drove me crazy. :)
the avatar confused me. It was crazy in December here too. You are probably well prepared for Ann Arbor.

Ah, this will prepare you well for Michigan!
I grew up in Michigan. I'm not afraid of the snow. :)

Well, you can still come to the pool party as long as you bring me a drink. :D

LOL. you invaders. :-P
how is the pool scene at woodbury? is it obscenely crowded in the summer? is there a limit on inviting people?

So, I'm officially out of the class of 2012. I've decided not to go to law school at all.

Wish all of you the best of luck.

Really sorry to hear that Elm. Any chance you might reconsider and come back next year?

Best of luck to you in whatever you end up doing!

First year schedule seems to suck ass for 3 out of the 4 sections no matter what. One section lucked out last year with no 8 a.m. classes all year, and first term their exams all started at noon instead of 8 a.m. like everyone else's. Then again, I think they had all take homes, and they drew four visiting profs in a row, which is more than anyone should have to stand.
we got fucked. really, really, really fucked.

Let mother nature bring it on. 8) I grew up in Northern Nevada, where it snows (although much less relative to here), then went to undergrad in California. After seeing half the states, I can honestly say that I have never seen so many goddamn trees and grass everywhere with such vibrant jade colors. I was really surprised, especially after only seen Michigan being mentioned in the media alongside pictures of dilapidated downtown Detroit on the news. And to be honest, Detroit is not as ghetto as I thought it'd be...it looks better than Oakland.

Oy, still NONE! Come on, registrar! And unlike last term, I didn't know any of them going in...so I'm completely in the dark (and especially terrified about two classes).

Quick question for current students -

I've narrowed my living choices down to an apartment complex about a 5-7 min walk from the law quad and a place a little north of the med school about a 5 min walk from a Michigan bus stop and with an Ann Arbor bus stop right outside. I figure that it's a maximum 25-30 min. trip from condo to law quad, but it seems that most 1Ls live much closer than that...

Any thoughts as to how the distance might impact my quality of life as a law student (meeting other 1Ls, getting involved in the school, study habits, etc.)? How many others come in from about that far away?

Any insight appreciated. Thanks guys!

fuck north campus and all that jazz.

it's boring, it's far, you won't want to go out as much, you don't want to rely on the buses, and you don't want to drive drunk. hell no.

that being said, where is your other apt complex?

the other apartment is just off of state st. near central campus, but my SO will be attending the med school so the place on north campus is closer for her. It's also a nicer and MUCH bigger condo for just about the same cost.

I realize that the place by the med school will be more inconvenient, but do you think that it would have a significant effect on my quality of life in law school?

Living in a smaller, less nice apartment will affect your QOL as well, and it seems to me that if either you or your SO will need to compromise on convenience, it's best to compromise in favor of the nicer place.

I'm planning to live outside walking distance so that I can get a place with the amenities I want. I know it will be inconvenient sometimes and that I'll need to push myself a bit more to get out and see people, but I know I can do that if I need to, and I commute three hours a day right now, so I think I can handle a ten minute bus ride to and from campus. It's all a question of what you're used to and what's important for you.

I would go for the nicer place first year and then see if you think the inconvenience outweighs the improved QOL from living in a nicer place. FWIW, I'm living on South State Street now and it's super loud. I have a decent apartment for the price, but it's not the most conducive environment for studying.

I commuted for 3 hours a day for the last year, so I feel like 1/2 an hour is freaking fantastic comparatively, but if you want to be able to roll out of bed and go to class, the farther apartment may not be the best choice for you.

Don't underestimate this, people. In freezing temperatures, which you will have for a while in Ann Arbor, it's very tempting not to go the distance for an 8am class.

I would choose the better apartment over convenience every time. (And my money's where my mouth is – for the last three years I've lived on the far edge of the Old West Side, a good 35 minute walk from campus). This is why god invented bikes...and metered parking.

It was really important to my law school success that I have some semblance of a life outside of law school, and that meant (among other things) having an apartment that felt like a home. YMMV.

eta: and unless you're pretty far north of the med school, that's not all that far.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
