I just put my seat deposit form/check in the mailbox five minutes ago, along with my application to live in the Lawyer's Club.

University of Michigan Law School Class of 2012.

Hot damn that looks pretty.

Does Michigan email you when they get the seat deposit? I have a couple of schools that I need to withdraw from, but I don't want to until I'm sure they've received my check...

they mail you a letter. if you check the admitted students' site in the section where they list admissions communications, you should see when they mailed it to you.

You can count on me being there. I'm mailing my deposit this week. Can't wait to have a Michigan email account, of all things, for some reason.

I didn't get an e-mail from admissions, but I got an e-mail about setting up my username for mich e-mail and wolverine access. It said "Now that you have confirmed your admission to the University, you need to create a uniqname and password..", so I'm counting that as my confirmation ;) It only took a few days to get that.

i'm having the worst trouble creating my uniqname! all the good ones are gone for me! plus my first initial + last name (which is what i'd like, ideally) = more than 8 letters . it blows :(

Sounds like a deal all around. And I'm definitely going to be doing MAP, and I fully expect you all to as well.

It's all starting to really sink in, and I'm absolutely ecstatic!

I'm considering it, though my parents (who live in AA) are convinced that I can get something cheaper and/or closer. I'm not so sure, but I'll look around a little when I am in town in May, then will apply for some places. If I do go with Woodbury, I'll aim for a place like what you're after, if they aren't all taken by then.

Hello Michigan Law Class of 2012,

I asked this in the Duke forum as well. I'm having a really hard time deciding between Duke and Michigan. I narrowed it down to both of these schools because the student body seemed to be the most friendly and laid-back.

-I went to both ASW and had a great time.
-I'm a New Yorker and looking to go back to NYC after Law School.
-Duke is giving me $48,000 and Michigan is giving me $45,000.

What made you choose Michigan over other schools, specifically Duke? Any insight you guys can give me would be great. Are there things I can do at Michigan that I can't do at Duke?

There is no clear choice here, which even most of the people on this forum would agree with. All in all, Michigan gives you no significant leg up in any area, same for Duke. The money difference is basically irrelevant. At this point, it should really be about where you see yourself enjoying most over the next three years. Also, Duke is a fairly significantly smaller class size, which has its advantages and disadvantages. You really can't go wrong- go with your gut.

I was afraid you would say that... I don't have a gut instinct for either school.

These were my favorite two as well, and I'm sure I'd have been happy at Duke. I basically felt that Michigan was clearly (not substantially, but clearly) better in just about every category that was important to me. I also really enjoyed the student body at Michigan and thought they seemed more diverse in terms of life experiences, but that's probably not fair, since I met a lot more people at Michigan (ASW, as opposed to individual visit).

I'm of the mindset that a larger class size is an advantage both for alumni network reasons and, more importantly to me, because it means they can offer more classes for upperclassmen to choose from. We're not talking about larger section sizes. And it's also still just not that big... smaller than my high school. Small enough that I know the majority of my class, but big enough that there are still new people to meet.

That's a very tough question to answer, and I'm probably not the best person to give a response as I did not apply to Duke. With that said, I'll give my 2 cents anyway.

Your price-tag is going to be very comparable for each school, so I don't think money is really going to be a deciding factor, as it was for me (about 90k cheaper than Northwestern and NYU, which really helped me cling to Michigan).

Both schools will place you into a large firm, should you decide that's where you'd like to go. I think Michigan tends to spread out more into Chicago and SF, if those are areas of potential interest, and is also very competitive in NYC, it's largest market by placement percentage.

I think Michigan has a noticeable edge when it comes to academia, placing 22 new academics in the past 5 years vs. 10 at Duke (although Duke has a smaller class-size, worth noting). Clerkships, however, is tough to give an advantage to. Duke puts in a higher class % into fed appellate positions (D: 8.6% vs M: 7.1% last year), but Michigan has a higher total number of placements total (D:18 vs M: 28). That's up to you to decide which is better.

Figures aside, however, you're going to be deciding largely based on which school you feel the most comfortable with. Forget rankings and all that, as they're both great schools, even though I do personally believe that Michigan has a noteworthy edge. I'm born and raised in heat (AZ & Cali), so I can understand that the cold can be a deterrent, yet I'm somewhat excited about living in Ann Arbor for a few years. I also find AA to be a much more vibrant community than Durham, but that's still my personal opinion. I also can't seem to get over the idea that this is the place I get to call my home for the next three years:

Best of luck in your decision, and hopefully we'll see you at Michigan come August!

I picked Michigan over Duke with equal scholarships, FWIW. I liked both ASWs, I loved Duke's campus (probably more than Michigan's campus overall, though the law quad clearly wins the LS battle). In the end though, I felt that Michigan was a better fit for me.

MAP here, too. Everyone seems to love it, and it sounds like a good way to meet some people and ease into the school year.

Seriously, does anybody dislike MAP?

If you do MAP and are living in the LC, can you move right into the LC then, or do you stay in the hotel as well?

And if you don't do MAP, does anyone know when you can move in?

Thank you for potentially saving me a phone call.

Thank you for your thorough analysis. I seem to get the feeling that Michigan has some edge or more prestige than Duke from reading these threads. I don't know how true that assumption is but I guess this decision is really hard regardless.

In what way was it a better fit?
