Re: URM AA
so "he" is apparently a well-traveled white dude with ancestors that had an advantageous position within the apartheid system. clearly, if your "friend" doesn't qualify, no one does!
seriously though, i think the application language precludes him from checking that box. this seems like an excellent way to get c&f pwned, although i'm not quite sure how these things work.

I will pay your friend $27.32 to check that box if he invites me to be there when he introduces himself in person to the school.

No he is not. African American is a term given to blacks in the united states who are decendants of slaves brought over here during the middle passage NOT immigrants from africa.TheWire wrote:I'm posting this one for a friend...He is originally from South Africa. It's funny how outsiders don't get this. Though what's even funnier is when the opposite happens, like when I saw CNN refer to a story about an "African-American" woman... in England.newyorker88 wrote:No he is not. What about Asian Americans? When did they need to be here by to count? Or Irish Americans?

african american implies some sort of experience as a black person in the united states. that identity traditionally belongs to people descended from african slaves. it is, however, extended to members of the black community no matter what their ancestry because of the shared history and reality of black oppression in the united states. your friend is not african american... he is white. the question is about race, not nationality.

BTW, here's how Kodak, that great definer of race defines African American.
so....by that definition you could be a recent immigrant from Africa who became a US Citizen...but you would have to be black.
African-American - A U.S. citizen having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.

Hahaha...yeah...they have a list of definitions that they use for suppliers. I guess they want more minority owned suppliers or some such thing.
I'm sure there are some better ones out there, but I'm lazy and that seemed like a decent one.

This is probably correct. However, since they don't ask for color I would check the box. If they asked for African American/black then no, but if just African American then yes.
They can't assume you understand AA equates to Black American. If they meant that they should write "black american".
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
