Would having a parent who had been murdered be reason for a diversity statement?

I know that it seems like it would be great in a personal statement but I am going a different direction with that. Would it be ok to add a diversity statement to mention the murder???

Also, I have an interest in criminal defense which seems a bit unnatural considering my background.

So this is something I wrote to help someone out with some brainstorming for their DS. I don't know if the first question is something you need to answer in your essay, but it is something to think about. I think if you can use your experiences (I'm really sorry, by the way) to answer the other questions, then I would definitely say go ahead and write it.

-What are the benefits of diversity in general? Why do schools want or care about diversity anyway?
-How do your experiences/background set you apart from the (maybe fictional) typical law school applicant?
-What ways have your specific experiences affected you perspectives on life or school?
-How are you going to use those perspectives going forward in your life? What have you learned from you experiences?
-How do you plan to share those lessons with your classmates (and faculty) in law school?

Thank you! Those are very thought provoking questions which will help lead me in the right direction.

My pleasure. Hope it does help.

I think the last question is especially important to answer explicitly in your DS, especially if it is a "non-traditional" DS, like yours will be.
