So I've already taken most of my pre reqs for my school's political science and history major requirements. Originally, I was going to double major in both of them but I don't really see the benefit. I'm thinking of just majoring in History and minoring in political science. I know law schools look at them both the same and really only care about your GPA and LSAT score, but would taking more political science classes help me be more prepared for the LSAT or law school in general? History, imo, is a lot easier than political science and I feel that the small amount of classes I take with a political science minor is not enough to help me much. I mean, I don't even have to take a stats or math class in college if I just major in history and minor in poli sci! And lastly, if I opted not to go to law school ultimately, does either a BA in history or political science have a better shot at landing a job?

Neither alone has a decent shot at a real career, both require grad school. Really, it just depends on the quality of your schools programs and your personal interest. I love political science, and at my shool poli-sci dept. > history, so the choice is easy.

Well I'm at UCLA for undergrad and from I hear, their Poli Sci and History departments are pretty top notch. But then again, I guess you guys are right...neither really have a shot at getting a career alone. I always just figured political science sounds such much better than a history degree. I mean at least Poli Sci you at least do something important like stats and numbers while History is just....history...

Did you just say that you do something important in Political Science? Ha. Hahahaha. Let's face it, if you're not an engineer or hard-science major doing research, you're not doing anyone or the world in general any favors by adding another Poli-Sci major to the mix.

Quoth my boyfriend's dad, when one of my friends told him he was a political science major: "What are you going to do, go work in the political science factory?"

Poli sci is the lesser of the evils here. The headquarters of the department of state's diplomat in residence for the SoCal region in @ UCLA (his office is in public affairs building). That's the guy in charge of recruiting foreign service officers for the DoS and the last time I talked to him he said they're targeting UCLA undergrads more than any other school. If I was graduating with a poli-sci degree and didn't want to go to law school right away, that's what I would do. It's quite an exciting job and looks pretty good on a school application ;)

First, do what you enjoy.

Second, there are far too many poli sci majors going around. Folks who want an arts and science degree but aren't sure what choose communications or poli sci or a similar major, rarely history.

I majored in both and am glad I did. I found that history was generally more demanding, and I doubt that's the case at my school only.

Anyone who thinks history does not include stats or numbers probably hasn't been in a history class before. There is an entire field known as economic history.
