That is what a hidden fee waiver is

I think they're under the impression that they gave me a need-based application last year.

isn't it weird asking for a fee waiver from a school that gave you one last year? UVA and northwestern gave me fee waivers. i emailed them and asked for one. it was pretty much "i got one last year. i have higher LSAT now. and work experience. can i have a fee waiver?"

I don't think thats weird. I've gone with something more like "I had received a fee waiver for your law school last application cycle, but I opted to wait until this current application cycle to apply to law schools. I was hoping that you could offer me a fee waiver for this application cycle."
It is weird when they don't reply, or send me a reply that doesn't make any sense.

While I did get one with a 177, I want to point out two reasons that may be so: 1) URM status and 2) my GPA is sub-par. Most people here who didn't get the fee waiver with 175+ just have outstanding stats all around. CLS probably thinks you're golden at HYS.
LOL @ the thought of Columbia worrying about its yield %
fwiw i got a waiver with better #s than 3.9/173 (not on the GPA side of things, but overall)

i also think the idea of columbia YPing seems sort of silly on the face of it, but that's just on principle and not anything i'm able to substantiate

edit: also, IIRC the email with the columbia waiver explicitly stated that they were awarding me the waiver based solely on my LSAT. i should go dig it out of the back of my inbox and check if that's correct.

edit2: sorry, looks like it's already been emptied, but i'm pretty certain one of the fee waiver emails i got said that and i think it was the columbia one.

How is that dumb?
Its great that they might send me one if i request it, but if they didnt send me one in the first place it was probably for a reason...

Maybe, I need to reconsider.....

You definitely need to reconsider, unless you get off on shelling out unnecessary large sums of money on law school applications.

I would reconsider. Sometimes is automated when they update their databases. I have got a fee waiver from everywhere I asked so far.

How do I know who to send the request to? just the general admissions email?

I put in a second request to Vandy asking for one since people with 164 LSATs and lower GPAs have received one.

I've already saved several hundreds of dollars by requesting waivers... to not ask is just retarded. The worst they can say is no.

Yes, send an e-mail to their general admissions office, give them your stats (LSAT/GPA) and LSAC account # and just be very direct saying you're interested in their school and would like to request a fee waiver.

Am I the only one who has an LSAC waiver but is still obsessively checking email for these things? I guess it's a point of pride (though I know it means little).

Got one from 'Dozo and another offer of admission from California Law (they use the Socratic Method!").

What if you're a splitter with a less than stellar GPA? Still report?

This is my situation and my philosophy has been there is no harm in asking. Worst case scenario they say they have a limited number of merit fee waivers available but you're welcome to apply for a need based waiver if you'd like, basically a "no" but whatever, you'll never know if you don't ask.
