Yesterday, I received in the mail what is unmistakably an application for a need-based waiver. I just went through to checkout and I do not have a CRS waiver. Anyone know when/if these will be coming out?

I do not remember anybody from last year who got a merit waiver from them, either automatically or by request. With Fordham's finances so tight, I wouldn't be surprised if they just don't do them.

Thanks. And wow, that's a bummer.
It might have been nice if they had told me that when I e-mailed them, rather than pretending that by "merit" I might have actually meant "need."

VoidSix wrote:I emailed NYU and they claimed they don't give out fee waivers, only the LSAC fee waiver that stresses extreme need. Are they lying to me?

I hate to say "lying" because it just sounds like something you shouldn't say about a school you really want to go to... but they gave me a fee waiver, so it does seem that their statement is inconsistent with reality.

NYU is not the only school guilty of doing this either, I wish schools would just be straight foward. I remember when I e-mailed Emory and requested a waiver, they straight up told me my GPA was too low. I much prefer that to schools who throw out those statements that are inconsistent with reality :)

+1 NYU is lying. they sent me a fee waiver in the mail and i was surprised because i have a 168 which i think is below their 25th percentile.

I have a 173 / 3.9 and they rejected my request for a waiver, so I'm refusing to apply out of spite.

Do you have to apply individually to each school you apply to??? Thanks.

You're thinking of the LSAC Fee Waiver. Which is only need-based, and apparently you need a lot of need to get it. Schools however give fee waivers based on merit, usually after your LSAT scores come in. This is through the CRS. So, if you take the LSAT, after you get your scores back, you should at least get some fee waivers from schools. There can also be "hidden" CRS fee waivers that the schools don't email you about, but if you apply to that school, you can see when you checkout that the fee is waived. Also, you can email schools asking them for fee waivers (with your score, gpa, & LSAC #), and some might give them to you.
So there are many ways to get fee waivers.

I applied for the LSAC Fee Waiver and got rejected. I figured with my salary and the fact that I wasn't a dependent would help, but I have a little money locked up in a CD and I think that's what did it.

The UGA guy was nice at the forum and gave a fee waiver to me yesterday despite having no LSAT, but I expressed a ton of interest in the school (it's one of my top choices depending on my LSAT). I really wish I had an LSAT to mention yesterday because a lot of people asked.

I asked Cornell for a fee waiver and they rejected my request. I applied anyway and paid that $80. Now they send me a fee waiver in the mail and I have to write a note asking for a refund.....

Why didn't they just grant me one when I asked for it?!

Crap, they're still sending out FW? Did you call and ask them about the refund or something?

They said in their letter that if you've already applied and paid the fee, you just need to send the FW memo with a request back and they'll send you a check.

Mine was CRS hidden, but a week later I got a very large packet in the mail that had a page telling me about the fee waiver.

No big. I was actually really depressed getting the fee waiver since my numbers would NOT get me in. Sad day.

Just wondering how they went about determining who gets one. Numbers? Location?

I emailed some schools about fee waivers and their response was along the lines of "mehhh... we'll be sending them out in the fall via CRS so make sure your profile is set to 2010 and if you get one you'll know."

Should I re-email these schools after I get my new score? Saying that I want to apply asap given rolling admissions or should I just pay the app fee?

Yea, if you have less than a 5% chance of getting in, they might send you one.

Are schools handing out fee waivers if you attend their Graduate and Professional School Day fairs? I know we have one coming up in a few weeks and a few of my friends said they'd get fee waivers as long as they print out the email notice and show it to the reps at the booths.

Yeah. We had one a few weeks back and some of the schools would get you to have the person at the booth sign some small form you printed out. Once you did that you were to send it to them and they would grant you one. Couldn't hurt to pike around the fair and see if anybody has a way you can get their fee waiver.
