Cram & Jam. Apple's Back to School promotion was announced this morning.
$230 rebate equating to a free 8gb iPod Touch with Mac purchase.

So looks like a no go as far as having the rebate able to be used for an iPhone.
Also the bottom Macbook (the white one) was refreshed as well.

EDIT: here's the link - http://store.apple.com/us/browse/campai ... Mjk3NzY4Mg

Anyone who is teetering between a netbook and a notebook might want to look at Lenovo's new 12 inch "netbook", the IdeaPad S12 http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/25/leno ... ion-chips/. It really bridges the gap between notebooks and netbooks in terms of power, size/weight, and price.

I can't imagine that there is anything it cannot handle law-school wise, but I am sure others here could give a better analysis of this. It does come with XP, however, and is probably a little light to tackle vista. But at $500, and a decent keyboard, it is hard to complain.

Bad part is that it will not be released until mid-June, and the version with the Ion graphics card will not be in until mid-August.

Kids, just get an apple and use bootcamp if need be for examsoft. Most schools give you free office for macs nowadays. Also, apple just upped the specs (but not the cost) on it's basic white macbook.

http://www.apple.com/macbook/white/

Also take $100 off with your student status and get a free ipod touch as well!

Ha, then you don't have to get it.
Or, you could get it (free, after you get the rebate), and just sell it to someone who does want it.

+1 Although something tells me that you'll be able to get great deals on eBay iPods in a couple of months

what do you guys think of the msi x-slim x340? the only negative seems to be the keyboard but I guess I can just use an external one.

 You know I've been trying to figure out if you are a programmer or tech support, but since you seem to enjoy vista so much I have to go with neither.

Another wrong assumption. You are trying too hard. Stop trying.

No. If you could, they would just say $200 odd dollars off the purchase of a macbook.

The difference is in the kind of RAM that is in the Macbook.
The White Macbook has DD2 RAM, whereas the Unibody Macbooks have DDR3 RAM. DDR3 is the newer, and better RAM.
They aren't really DDR2 Macbook or DDR3 Macbook per se, just White Macbook & Unibody Macbook. Although right now (with the recent spec bump to the White Macbook), the only thing other than the design that is better about that base Unibody Macbook is that it has DDR3 RAM. (It also has a 2.0GHz processor, whereas the White Macbook now has a 2.13GHz processor). This makes me feel like we can expect spec bumps for the Unibody Macbooks this summer, maybe after WWDC.

Do report on what you think about the white keyboard. I'm curious to see if it'd easily get those brown stains.

They messed up and gave you the wrong netbook, or you decided you wanted the MSI U100?

I've had my acer aspire one for about a month now and I really like it. No regrets whatsoever.

But I thought I would send a link to this deal with verizon wireless. It looks like the HP Mini they are offering has only 80 gb of ram, but its a lot cheaper and comes with wireless access:

What? The iPod touches only go to 32 gigs and I have just about filled my 30gig video ipod. A new iPod would only be changing the design. My question would possibly be better asked, can I use the rebate toward my Macbook purchase?
You can get $229 on an iPod Touch or 120 GB Classic, $199 on a 16 GB Nano, $149 on a 8 GB Nano, and $79 on a Shuffle. You then simply list it as new and unopened on ebay. Voila, you have the price of the ipod (or more) back on your macbook purchase.

A friend sent this to me, I don't know enough about computers to really join the debate of Mac v. PC but I thought some of you would get a kick out of this:
BILL GATES vs GM

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way
computers have enhanced our lives, read on.

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the
computer industry with the auto industry and stated: 'If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we
would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.'

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: 'If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics (and I just love this part):

1) For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash........Twice a day.

2) Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to
buy a new car.

3) Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You
would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows,
shut off the car, restart it and reopen the windows before you could
continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

4) Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause
your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would
have to reinstall the engine.

5) Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was
reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would
run on only five percent of the roads.

6) The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would all
be replaced by a single 'This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation'
warning light.

7) The airbag system would ask 'Are you sure?' before deploying.

8) Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out
and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door

handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9) Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn
how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate
in the same manner as the old car.

10) You'd have to press the 'Start' button to turn the engine off.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
