Well I asked my boss for an LOR so they already knew I had plans, but I just gave notice at my annual review because we talk about future goals, etc.. I'm leaving end of July, but I'm the main person actively working on 3 fairly important projects here at work (EE also) and I basically just said hey, my goals are to finish these things before I go. I've been here 6 years and I work in a small group where losing me will be a significant impact, and it will take some time to find a suitable replacement, we went through layoffs here and my boss actively made sure that I wasn't one of them, so I think it's only fair that I give some notice.

Honestly though I'd happily take a layoff but I'm not going to be so lucky.

The place I interned at during college did the same thing, but they at least paid the two weeks. Many places won't even do that.

People in that gap time are probably horrifically unproductive, and can't take on new work.

For my company it is typically because people go to a competitor. As if they are gathering secrets those last two weeks that they weren't gathering two months before.

Yea the reason 2 weeks is standard is because if you give months of notice it's possible that your boss will just fire you straight up. It's to protect yourself. If you have a really good relationship with your boss you can always give more notice (your call), but I think that's an unnecessary risk in most cases.

I think I need counseling to deal with the chronic overwhelming sense of disgust I've been dealing with ever since I entered the professional world.

Yes! I am also happy to post that my last day of work is tomorrow. I will still be working and making money this summer, but no boss and lots of free time and reading.

Does anyone else have an excessive amount of fluorescent lights in their office? The small cubicles are bad enough, but there is a constant flow of cheap, artificial lighting beaming down all day that makes me really nauseous from time to time. It also doesn't help that there are no windows at all to let in some natural light.

Well, I originally told work I was leaving July 3....but I changed that today to a week earlier....so my last day for sure is June 25th.

I seriously just can't take it anymore. My boss is lucky I gave her two months notice.

TOMORROW IS MY LAST DAY!!!

Planned to work 'til August; quitting and moving to South America for three months.

Screw saving money and professional responsibility!

Now off to pull an all nighter to finish up a policy analysis for said job. Next time I stay up all night to work on something, it'll be something for myself, not someone else (and for which I will receive no monetary compensation, just grades).

But, quitting is the most amazing feeling.

MrsTrucker: Trucker D gave notice on Monday. But then, in the trucking industry, drivers are doing good to give any notice at all. He didn't like not giving more notice, but we were just notified of his summer program acceptance on Monday! Now we have to move and be ready for class by the 26th!

I have about of ten of those long fluorescent tubes in my office/cubicle which is about the size of three king size beds.

We have rows of cubicles, each of which has storage space along the top of the innermost side, and fluorescent lighting above those cabinets. I figured out that I can prop open the hatches in such a way that it prevents direct bulb-to-eye invasion. It's mildly helpful.

I'm lucky enough to work in a relatively new building with lots of natural light. Not that it makes staring at grey cubicle walls all day much more bearable.
