Re: Darrow Invite
Through email.
Dear <Objection>:
Of all the merit scholarships awarded by the University of Michigan Law School, the Darrow is the apogee. The award of a Darrow Scholarship reflects not merely the recipient's outstanding scholastic achievements, because those abound in our student body, but our sense that the recipient will one day go on to a remarkable career. Darrows vary in amount, but can be as large as full tuition for three years at the Law School, plus a stipend.
Our comprehensive review of your application materials has led us to conclude that you are a fine candidate for a Darrow. If you would like to be considered, please compose an essay on the following: In 500 words or less, please tell us why you are interested in a law school education. When you imagine the educational environment that is most likely to help you to fulfill your ambitions, what do you see?
Please return the essay by mail, fax or email to:
<deleted>
If possible, we would like to receive your materials by Tuesday, December 23. We recognize, however, that this is often a particularly challenging time of the year for our applicants to prepare additional materials; if, therefore, you need an extension, you shouldn't hesitate to ask—I'll be happy to allow you some additional time.
Once I receive it, I will forward your essay, along with the materials you submitted with your Law School application, to the Darrow Faculty Committee for consideration. You can expect to learn a decision within two weeks of the submission deadline. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Again, I congratulate you on your outstanding accomplishments. We would be proud to have you join us in Ann Arbor as part of the entering class of 2009.

Pretty depressing having not been accepted (or even received my status checker for that matter). Was still able to delude myself into thinking I may not have to pay sticker for Michigan if I got in.
Edit: Wow, pity party. Congrats! Hope you both get the big'n

Man, Dean Z. always brightens my day. I wonder if law school at Michigan would be like that...
Anybody know someone who took a Darrow over Harvard? I kind of want some perspective is all...

Yeah, I'd assume those in competition for this kind of award must have stellar numbers. I'm too am curious if anyone here who is nominated would consider it over Harvard.

Not to put the cart before the horse, but I really have no idea. It's an extraordinarily tough choice, and one I would be thankful to have to make.Pathfinder wrote:I wish Dean Z would brighten my day! haha oh well. I mean, Harvard is Harvard...
But there is something extremely liberating about graduating debt free (and still being able to secure a market job if you wanted one).
At this point in time in the hypothetical, I lean Harvard (in part because of the current state of the economy), but a bad visit to HLS and a good one to U MIch could change that.
I already have a soft spot in my heart for Michigan. Absolutely love everything I've heard and read about it.

There's got to be something special about you though, I remember you heard back from Berkeley almost a week before anyone else.

Grats muddy and gtg!
I'm not sure. Its weird, I started out not even planning on applying to UMich. Then I got the fee waiver with that hand written note and I suddenly became very interested in the school. Getting accepted and seeing the video propelled it to top 3 pick... Now the possibility of a Darrow...
I was even going to cancel my LSAT score... what a change of pace..

a week before other people on here....but i know dean T made more calls that day, he said so.
i would pick full Mich over Harvard........not that this will be a realized dilemma.

Re: Darrow Invite
Congratulations, folks. It looks like you're going to have to choose between some spectacular options. How exciting!
I think I'd go Darrow instead of HLS (not that I'll have that choice), especially since I'd love to settle in the Midwest.
