Brown University Law School

Postby KCR22 » Wed Apr 16, 2008 12:52 am

I heard recently from an alum of Roger Williams that Brown University has put in a bid to adopt Roger Williams University. Has anyone else heard this?

Nope, but if it's true, it seems a little odd. A lowly ranked ivy law school? I don't know how much appeal that would have.

if that where to happen I wouldn't doubt it if Roger Williams would break the T20 the following year the US News Rankings where published......

Why would this be so? What would fundamentally change about the school, other than the fact that the school begins attracting naive students who think that simply having the Brown brand name will make a difference?

I really wonder how these rumors get started. Anyway, from wikipedia about Brown's charter:
The charter's language has long been interpreted by the university as discouraging the founding of a business school or law school. Brown continues to be one of only two Ivy League colleges with neither a business school nor a law school (the other being Princeton).

Not that this would necessarily stop them from creating a law school, but if they haven't abandoned this ideology after 200 years, I'm not sure why they would do so now.

naive students with good scores. Also, if they changed the name to Brown University Law School I wouldn't be surprised to see a huge increase in the reputation scores... especially from practitioners who didn't know about Roger Williams.

I think it would at least break the Top 30, probably Top 20 by its second year. It would be great for current students. Imagine being accepted to Roger Williams, but graduating from BROWN!

I think it would take longer than people expect to move up in the rankings like that. You'd need to attract and hire a lot of new faculty, get your reputation going, lot lot lot of groundwork. It can happen (see Texas boosting their ranking years back by nabbing great faculty from other schools - but they didn't have so far to rise) but I definitely don't see some magic occurring in only a few years time. Brown Law does have a nice ring to it though, maybe even more than Princeton Law.

What years are you talking about with Texas? They've seemed to be pretty consistent over the years . . .

They all internship in NYC, location of the business school is kinda irrelevant--just look at Wharton.

I've actually heard this rumor as well. Apparently the idea is to really cut down the class size of the school when they take it on in order to keep the same vibe that the University has already. I believe that they will actually have the smallest class size next to Yale. Not sure what faculty they are thinking of bringing on, or who they have in their sights as dean though.

I hope they take my idea of offering overqualified applicants "balla stipendz"...

This sounded ridiculous and untrue.

And then I found out that Brown only established its medical school in 1975.

Perhaps they've reinterpreted their charter.
Perhaps they've realized they're no Princeton, and can't get by on the strength of their undergraduate rep alone.

I still think this is a baseless rumor, but I admit I could see it happening.

And if it were to happen I think they'd open their own school.
