Stanford visits/interviews, how important?

Post by sdrawkcab » Wed Oct 11, 2017 9:17 pm

On the Stanford admissions page, I notice they recommend scheduling a visit to meet with the admissions committee. Is this important for admission, or is it just to get familiar with the school? Stanford's one of my top choices so I'm willing to go if it's important, but I'm in the Midwest and would rather not have to take time of work.

Thanks in advance.

This is mostly reading smoke signals, but Stanford apparently tries to set itself apart (from Harvard and Yale) by admitting students who are not only academically-qualified but also likable. If you think you can create that impression through your application alone, it's probably not a big deal to do an interview. If, on the other hand, you have a habit of dry writing but are much more charismatic in person, then going to see someone in person and put a face to your name could be significant.
