Chances without retake (3.95/168)

Postby doublepug » Wed Aug 02, 2017 10:28 am

First time posting
I took the June LSAT and scored a 168, which was below my PT average. Day of I had a mishap with the bathrooms at my test center, and during one LR section I had to stop about 7 minutes early because I would have peed my pants had I not. On that section I scored -7 of the 11 I got wrong, and got only -1 on the other LR.
I decided to retake after reading these forums, but am second guessing it only because it seems like I have a reasonable chance of getting in schools I'm interested in with the June score (UT, Vanderbilt, maybe Duke or NYU). My main motivation for wanting to retake is to increase my chances at NYU/Columbia (where my boyfriend may be able to line up a great job but would turn it down to go with me) and potentially get more money at other schools.

Is it worth it if I could get 4+ higher? Or should I stick with the 168 if it gets me into somewhere like Vandy with money and NYU/Columbia without?

Thanks

Yes, it is absolutely worth a retake to get 4+ more points. 172+/3.95 is full ride territory for CCN.

No. Schools only look at the highest score, and an increase of 1 point in the range you're looking at is extremely significant.

I don't think that's accurate. Pretty sure you need 174 range for *good* full-ride chances at CCN? Obvi you are in the running for Ruby with that, but I think softs are much more important at that point. Also fairly certain Vanderbilts at NYU and Hammys at C are 174 (based on last cycle data)

OP, as for your question, I had 168/3.98 last cycle - was offered full @ Vandy/WUSTL/everywhere lower, approx 100k at Cornell/Michigan, 60k at UVA/Duke/NYU, 30k at Chicago.

WL at Harvard.

Didn't apply to NU/Columbia/Berk/Yale/a couple others

Absolutely retake. I retook for a 171 in June. Hopefully looking at full offers from Mich/UVA this time around

Absolutely retake. Even bumping your score up to 170 would put you in the running for HYS, and decent scholarships from CCN down.

I'm going to echo what everyone else has said: a retake is a MUST. You had to use the bathroom and missed 7 point in that section alone, you are clearly leaving a 174+ on the table, which could be the difference between simply getting in and getting a full-ride at Uchicago, columbia, NYU. If you need motivation, here is a picture of $200,000 in cash, or roughly the equivalent of a Ruby. It's a no brainer.

I'm getting the gist that a Hammy and a Ruby are a type of scholarship but can someone clarify what that is?

BTW thanks for all the advice - my law advisor was less convinced I should retake given the schools i'm considering so this is reassuring/ good motivation

Hamilton, Vanderbilt, and Rubenstein are the full-tuition scholarships at Columbia, NYU, and Chicago, respectively.

And stop talking to pre-law advisors. I've never encountered a story of one that knew what the hell they were doing.
