Don't be embarrassed. Call or email the admissions officers and ask them not to send you any physical mail. Nobody in their right mind would object to that.

You will still be getting all kinds of unsolicited junk mail from schools to which you do not even apply unless you change your mailing address in LSAC. I think a P.O. Box is really the safest way to go.

Hopefully if you were diligent about opting out out, it won't be an issue, but I'd still get a p.o. box if it were me.

Just a reminder that most law schools/parent schools have excellent psychological services free of charge for students. Best of luck, and hope you get out of that environment.

Just saw this posted. Wanted to say good luck. While I can't imagine living in an abusive environment, I did have my fair share of detractors regarding my law school plans (read: sexism--"it's a man's job"). Just remember, you're doing this for yourself and your goals in life. Don't let other people's views bog you down.
I considered getting a p.o. box myself because I feared my folks would throw out my acceptance letters. In the end, I told them that I can see my admission status online, so I would know if they screwed with my mail. Obviously that's a half truth, but it seemed to work.

Again, good luck!

OP my heart goes out to you, I hope you can use your negative experiences as fuel in your law school and future legal career (I grew up in an emotionally and physically abusive home as well). As a temporary safeguard you might also want to think about notifying the post office about your new PO box. That will make them forward any mail addressed to your current address for a few weeks. That should help with some of the promotional material that may already be on the way. Best of luck to you.

Oh boy, I'm in tears reading your story. I was just reviewing my Academic Summary Report and looking at the year that I got 2 C's. It was the year that the abuse in a relationship I was in started. That relationship was part of why I didn't go to law school out of undergraduate. The irony being that I the following year, when I was still dealing with the tail ends of that relationship I did a business law project that involved women in abusive relationships. Nobody knew that I was struggling to get out of that relationship as I wrote that. Heck, most people don't know about it now.

I am now 16 years out at 40 years old and finally ready to do this. I haven't decided whether I want to share my story in my applications process to explain why I didn't go to law school then.

As far as my thoughts for you. Please, please, please make sure to file a forwarding address for your physical address. You can do it by individual recipient and that way if any schools have your old address that won't get through. I changed my email with LSAC part way through and I now get emails from schools to both email addresses so if they pulled your info before you changed the address for any reason it could slip through.

Finally, you can do this. You can get out and lead a life that is productive, healthy, and loving. You are better than this. The steps you have already taken prove it. If for some reason you don't get in DO NOT let it define you. Please don't. If I can be of any help in any way please don't hesitate to PM me.
