Here's my situation

Postby mstatelawdawg » Sun Sep 25, 2016 9:15 pm

Just took the September LSAT. Don't feel good about it. I know for sure that I bombed the virus game, and I don't feel too good about the second two games. I'm also iffy about RC and a few LR questions. We'll see. My PT average was a 166, so hopefully I score in the low to mid 160s.

Here's my question: How many LSAT points does my GPA buy me? I am a History major with a 3.94 LSAC GPA.

My list of schools is 1) Alabama, 2) Georgia, and Ole Miss (Safety).

Alabama's numbers are:
LSAT 25%: 157; 50%: 163; 75%: 165
GPA 25%: 3.45; 50%: 3.82; 75%: 3.92

Georgia's numbers are:
LSAT 25%: 156; 50%: 162; 75%: 164
GPA 25%: 3.36; 50%: 3.71; 75%: 3.83

Ole Miss's numbers are:
LSAT 25%: 151; 50%: 155; 75%: 157
GPA 25%: 3.04; 50%: 3.40; 75%: 3.64

What LSAT scores would lock me for admissions/money at these schools?

For the record, I am a white male.

Your GPA is great. If you're around the LSAT median for a school you'll probably get in.

How did you prepare for the LSAT? With a score in the mid to high 160s you're looking at T14 with scholarship.

I guess I'm saying don't sell yourself short. If you perform at your average you'll have some decent options. Also definitely retake if you underperformed.

Thanks! I used 7Sage. LG gave me the most trouble starting out, and 7Sage's LG method was my favorite, so I went with them for my whole LSAT prep and I loved it. My highest PT was a 171 with a couple of 168's and 169's. That's why I'm pretty disappointed in the Sept. LSAT. I don't know if you took it yesterday, but there was a super weird game that gave everyone a lot of trouble.

My reach school is Vandy. Their LSAT median is 166 and 75th is 168.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Low 160s would be pretty safe for admission I think. I got into UGA and Alabama with two majors (one history) and a slightly higher LSAC GPA. I had in-state tuition for UGA but didn't pursue any scholarships because I decided not to go there. I got into Alabama late and had already picked a school, but the admissions people were very nice and asked about what scholarship money I got from the school I eventually attended. That doesn't help you much about the money question, but hopefully it helps some. I applied in 2011, fyi.

Also, unless you want to practice in Mississippi, you should have other safety schools. Just request application waivers from some other schools. If you want to practice in GA, go ahead and apply to GA State. If you want to practice in Alabama, I guess apply to Samford?

Gotcha. I'll add those to my list. I was already thinking about GSU. What was your LSAT score/range?

Shouldn't you have Emory down as well? A 3.94 is gonna open a lot of doors for you.

Haven't really looked in to Emory. I'll probably apply though, depending on my LSAT.

Congratulations. Your numbers look good. You should be proud of yourself, poor virus game or not.

I'm in almost the exact same boat as you. 3.94 GPA and just took the LSAT this last weekend. That virus game was bull, and by the time I figured it out time was basically up. Trying to get in UGA, for some specific reasons, maybe we'll be classmates.

Urging KtLaw747 and Mstatelawdawg to aim for Duke with $$. Please. This is not about prestige, this is about your employment prospects.

What kind of numbers do you need for Duke with $$?

If nothing else I would through Vanderbilt and Emory to your list. Your GPA is great for both, and may make up for a few points under your LSAT average if you choose to apply. Best of luck, and I hope you did better than you think!

I was in the low 160s and that was a few years back. I went to Emory. I think you would get in, but a low 160s LSAT with a no-application merit scholarship but you would still be looking at a lot of debt unless you applied for one of the higher scholarships and got it.

You should be able to swing higher-ranked schools than Alabama and UGA, so people telling you to apply broadly are correct. I'm not sure what your goals are from law school. You'll get in at good schools as long as you're in the 160s. You should really be thinking about the portability of your degree, employment goals and the opportunities a school affords, and how much debt you will take on from law school. Make sure you look at each school's employment and debt information from it's website, and make sure you look on law school transparency information.

Honestly, you should strongly consider retaking since you don't feel good about your exam. Take a course or a different course and try to beat what you were PTing at for the September exam. There's no real harm for retaking, and LSAT scores are really what drive scholarships.
