Impact of Publication on Admissions

Post by annak » Tue Dec 08, 2015 11:28 am

Long-time lurker, haven't posted much. I'm in the process of studying the LSAT and want to apply for a combined PhD/Law degree. My GPA is pretty low and I'm banking on my LSAT and softs to make up for it. I just recently got confirmation that one of my papers is going to be published in an international law journal - it's like #3 or #4 outside of the US. Not terribly exceptional. I've got one I'm sitting on and another in the works I'm hoping will get R&R before I put in my applications. Was wondering what kind of impact publications have on JD admission. For PhD applications, I know it's big deal. I'll also have a great reference from my co-author, but I'm wondering specifically about the papers themselves so I know how to allocate my time. Thanks!

For JD admissions, they are a nice soft but matter far less than your GPA and LSAT. They could tip the balance if you're up against someone who doesn't have any publications, but they won't really push you beyond your numbers.
