Grade cutoffs and "tiers"

Is it true that the grade cutoffs from firm hiring are based on tiers?

I know that YHS have an advantage over other schools (as in, can be ranked less in the class and still be hired), but does this carry over to the other "tiers?" Will being at CCN mean that lower ranked students will be hired than MVPB would? What about intra-tier: is there a difference in grade cutoff between Penn and Virginia?

And are the tiers really based on US News or is that coincidental?

Ccn sends more people into biglaw than mvp (not so much p). Mathematically I would assume so.

Based on biglaw placement it seems like (at least for NYC firms) cornell and Penn have lower cutoffs than say Michigan. But no real data available I think and will vary by firm I am sure.

Data doesn't lie, but also doesn't account for self-selection.

Broad strokes here but- Historically the "tiers" were more based on either US News rankings or admissions criteria (especially lsat scores) than job placement I think

But yeah, obviously it's complicated
