Is a latino studies minor worth the trouble for a URM?

Postby LawurmStudent » Wed May 06, 2015 6:49 pm

Hi, graduating next fall. I am a URM applying to T14 schools with below average stats without considering URM status. I am interested in getting a Latino Studies minor to push being a URM.

However, this adds extra classes and credits that I would not have to take otherwise. This would possibly even mean having to graduate in the spring.

I know that majors and especially minors don't mean much if anything but what about this scenario because I am a URM.

Thoughts?

Any input appreciated thanks!

If you're actually a URM, then it has nothing to do with your undergrad minor (or major or school or city etc). Write a diversity statement with your app in addition to checking the box and you're golden.

I plan on writing about being an educator of latino culture. This would be good support.... but I would agree that in any other situation it wouldn't be a question.

Thank you very good advice. I don't think the Latino Studies minor will be worth the trouble it causes.

Pick majors and minors based on what you're interested in, not what it'll look like on an app. You'll be a lot happier, and it doesn't make a difference unless you major in underwater basket weaving
