New Scholarship Info After Depositing at Another School

I paid my deposit for Columbia earlier this week, and I *just* now heard from NYU that they've awarded me a decent chunk of money. With NYU's deposit deadline coming up in two days, is it even possible for me to leverage this offer with Columbia? If so, how? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well I would just treat it like you'd be happy to lose that deposit money in order to go to NYU with a better scholarship (you should be). Just email Columbia and say at this point you will be going to NYU, baring an increased offer from cls. The only leverage they have over you is a whopping $600

There could be language in Columbia's commitment to matriculate saying you have to withdraw from other schools, but even then I'm not sure how much that matters.

But srsly why did you deposit at cls already when you could have waited until May 1st since its an online deposit.

edit: if the NYU offer is about the same as you got from cls, you're probably out of luck. I just assumed it was significantly higher.

I definitely admit it was a mistake depositing earlier than I had to, but at the time (just a couple days ago) both schools had no-offered me. All else being equal I'd pick Columbia, but the 30-50k just now offered by NYU makes a difference to me.

No worries. I know where you're coming from.

At this point you just gotta play hardball with cls. If you have no problem going to nyu with your new offer, then you have plenty of room to ask for a higher offer from cls. Just go for it.

I say you have a decent shot of getting Columbia to offer you something. Just be direct and ask them if they are willing to help defray your cost of attendance.

I'm not sure if I would go to NYU over Columbia if the difference was, say, 10 or 20k, but 50k is a lot of money. NYU is probably the better school at that discount.
