WUSTL v. Fordham
Hi All,
Been a long time lurker but this is my first post. I have a dilemma right now and was hoping that you all can give me some insight/ ideas.
I am currently deciding between WUSTL and Fordham, both at sticker. Money is not a concern to me as I had lost a relative two years ago and she left me a pretty good sum of inheritance that can cover almost all of my tuition.
I guess my dilemma here is-- WUSTL is a much better ranked school, but my goal is to practice corporate law at a NYC BigLaw firm. I've lived in and worked in NYC for the past two years so would love to stay here, but I also am not sure if choosing Fordham over WUSTL is a smart long term goal.
Given all this, what would you do in my shoes? Thank you all in advance!

Re: WUSTL v. Fordham
If money is not a concern that should be all the more incentive for you to retake the LSAT and go to Columbia, NYU or Penn at sticker (or, better yet, Cornell on a significant scholarship so you can spend your inheritance money on other things) instead of either of these schools. Among them, Fordham is definitely a far better option for your goals. The rankings don't matter, Fordham has a much better reputation in NYC than WUSTL and regularly places a greater percentage of its class into biglaw (and, that too, entirely into NYC biglaw) than WUSTL does. Seriously, though, retake if you want a good shot at biglaw.

These schools don't really match your goals. I would retake and aim higher.

Re: WUSTL v. Fordham
god please don't! save as much as that money as you can or invest it and apply like any other applicant would as if you didn't have money (neither of those at sticker)
just bc you can, why? does that make it smart?

How does saying goodbye to $200K make money not a concern...

Re: WUSTL v. Fordham
Invest the money in a conservative (safety of principle) fund or funds. Then invest in a LSAT retake. But, if you must, Fordham is clearly the better option for NYC placement & NYC internships & NYC connections.

Re: WUSTL v. Fordham
opening up a god damn video rental store is probably a better investment.
Blockbuster is totally gone now, OP, so the retiree population is probably dramatically underserved w/r/t VHS and porn consumption.

probably only like the original victoria's secret model would work w/r/t the porn though (ie mail order in secretive boxes)
"edith's secret" or something. secretive porn VHS delivery by mail for old folks. Way better investment than fordham at sticker. I'm pretty sure that I'm not even joking.

I think Fordham is better for your goals than WUSTL. However, as many have already stated, your best bet is to retake the LSAT and be able to attend a school like Columbia or NYU. Even Penn and NU place well in NYC.

The above schools at sticker, while often not a good idea, are probably a better idea for you because they're paid for and will more likely get you into the job you prefer.

You're better off investing that money in something other than these two schools at sticker.
You're very fortunate. If you're willing to pay sticker, retake and pay sticker for a T13.

+1. I voted Fordham as it is a better match of the two, but it still only gives you a 1 in 3 shot at biglaw. Retake for t13.BigZuck wrote:These schools don't really match your goals. I would retake and aim higher.

op here- thanks so much for all your advice! I realize that I am incredibly lucky in this- but I really don't think I want to take off another year and am 100% set on going to law school in the fall. I agree- i do think that fordham has a much bigger presence in NYC but I feel like its not as known nationally/ internationally, which i worry will be a problem down the line.

You are making a serious mistake. You're blowing an inheritance that you could use to MAKE money, and you're doing it so you don't have to spend a year working and learning how to take a multiple choice test.kayyy wrote:op here- thanks so much for all your advice! You're putting too much weight in rankings. WUSTL won't beat Fordham in NYC.

This is on the shortlist for "Biggest Mistakes of the 2014-2015 Law School Application Cycle"
You're spending a ton of money that could be put to better use to buy something that likely won't get you where you want to go. And that could all be avoided by taking a 4 hour multiple choice test.

Re: WUSTL v. Fordham
I mean, I don't think going to WUSTL or Fordham automatically equals to not getting a BigLaw job, right? My current job is really demanding in terms of hours, which I think is what impacted my test score in the first place. I did really well at a pretty competitive UG (which i realize doesn't automatically translate to getting good grades in law school, but I definitely have enough work ethic to do nothing else but study while at law school). If I take another year off, that's 3 years btwn UG and law school which honestly feels like too big of a gap for me, since i'm not really trying to figure out anything- I know pretty well what I want to do and why I want to go to law school, so would like to get started on that as soon as I can.Clearly wrote:You are making a serious mistake. well that's incredibly stupid but it's your money (well, not for long) and your life. You're effectively taking this person's enormous, generous gift and lighting it on fire.kayyy wrote:op here- thanks so much for all your advice! You're going to seriously regret this in a few years. But at least you can't say you weren't warned.

Re: WUSTL v. Fordham
I don't know why would you conceive of it as "trying to figure something out" instead of as "avoiding a 6-figure bill". You can save more money in this year, simply by doing better on a 4-hr multiple choice test, than you'll make in a few years working biglaw. And that's assuming you get biglaw.kayyy wrote:I mean, I don't think going to WUSTL or Fordham automatically equals to not getting a BigLaw job, right? Re: WUSTL v. Fordham
I also would like to elaborate here- I have taken the LSAT two times, both times not doing nearly as well as my PTs. I have honestly put a lot of time and effort into studying but I just really don't think I preform well in a standardized testing setting. I just am not confident that taking a whole year off would guarantee me getting into the LSAT range that I need. I feel like I have pretty decent options now and the thought of postponing my law school plans for another year- with no guarantee that I will absolutely blow the LSAT out of the park is just too risky.BigZuck wrote:This is on the shortlist for "Biggest Mistakes of the 2014-2015 Law School Application Cycle"
