4 Letters of Rec

Post by boaltlaw » Wed Apr 01, 2015 4:02 am

What is TLS's advice on letters of rec? What if someone can get 4 (great) letters of rec? Would it be better to reduce it to 3?

If you can get 4 great letters, send all 4 to the schools that will accept them. If any schools you are applying to have a limit of 2 or 3, send the ones you think are best. I sent 4 to several schools FWIW.

great as in they'll write great things about me. Only one of them would be considered "famous" in their field, but we are very close

I usually link to Yale's blog post on this subject.
http://blogs.law.yale.edu/blogs/admissi ... ation.aspx

She tends to recommend 2-3, with a very heavy emphasis on the fact that a third or fourth letter of mediocre (or even just good) is worse than two/three amazing letters.
