HElP ADMISSIONS QUESTION

Post by justinf92 » Mon Mar 16, 2015 1:01 am

Ok so I know Widener isnt the best school but its my only option at this point thats close to my home, which is very important to me. Anyways recently I've had some bad news. My gpa in college was a 3.3 but apparently my cumulative is just a 2.99. Also, despite getting 150-153 on practice tests I got a 148 on my lsats. But thats all in the past. I'm content with going to widener. According to the LSAC predictor I have around an 80 percent chance to get in. And according to LSACs page about the school on the link below I have a pretty good shot as well.(https://officialguide.lsac.org/Release/ ... px?sid=171)

So my questions are 1- is having a 2.99 going to effect me instead of a 3. up until a few hours ago I thought I had a 3 but whatever.

And 2- I recently began researching widener law and stumbled upon this http://www.lsac.org/officialguide/2013/lsac_5161.asp

Im not sure which applicant pool is more accurate, but its a huge difference. I go from a 70-80 percent chance to a 35 percent chance and I'm freaking out. My friend just got in with a 3.6 gpa and a 147 plus he got a 10k scholarship. In your opinion which applicant pool is correct/more accurate and whats my chances to get in. I'm aware widener sucks as a school but the DEL campus is actually good for me. I will have very little debt and a possible job through a friend. Please help!

JD Unemployment Reaches All-time High
Widener doesn't have good employment

Why is Widener so important to you? Why is being a lawyer so important to you? You will very likely end up at a job with $200,000+ in debt and a low salary that does not require a JD (if you are not among the 21% that ends up unemployed). Please elaborate. If you wish to pay $1.5k a month for years, I'll happily accept monthly payments.

to be honest. I have a psych degree which is pretty useless. My father has his own practice. I will be debt free and have a job working for him. I just need to get into widener. I just need to know if i have a good chance.

essentially yes. I'm very lucky. But my main concern right now is the discrepancy in the applicant pools I found. I need to know my odds

It's hard to say as I'm not sure how to gage an understanding of their methodology. The above poster outlined the sentiment eloquently. Generally it's above both medians is a solid chance, but I'm not sure how schools like Widener actually deny 45% of the incoming class. Who are those people? I'm going to presume your shot at admission is solid, given that Widener is more interested in taking tuition than actually placing graduates in legal jobs.

I still am not sure attending school is worthwhile but given that it's free and you have a job, you alleviate a lot of negativity coming your way. You need to make sure that job is written in stone, because if it is not you don't have a lot of alternative options.

just the part that throws me off is the huge discrepancy between the 2 applicant pools I found. One was directly from the LSAC website( the one that says I have a good chance) The other is from google but it looks very similar except for the odds. I dont think retaking the lsats is an option. I have to go this fall.

Very, very few people in the country fall under this category. Do you mind elaborating why you are one of those?

I wasnt a good student my first two years. I went to community college and knew I only needed a 2.5 to transfer to the school I wanted to go to. I did decent once I transferred, finishing with a 3.3 gpa. I did not know until recently that UGPA was a thing, my fault on that I should have been aware. I often took classes in the summer, got a c and transferred it knowing it wouldnt effect my gpa, turns out i was wrong. As for the LSATs I have serious insomnia and I was sick. The night of the test I took several sleeping aids but still got no sleep. Ending up pulling an all nighter and took the test hopped up on a combination of melatonin, benodryl and redbull. It was rough. I did much worse than I could have done. Sleep definitely played a factor.

Is she? Every law school rejected her and saved her a shit ton of debt, anxiety, and stress. I'd say they actually did her a service in this instance.

I'm going to go ahead and assume a lot of that 45% of people Widener rejects are people who didn't manage to fill out the application properly, have serious criminal records, or are missing things like an LSAT score.

Either that or they're just flat-out lying about their selectivity. Maybe the admissions office staff sits around and fills out fake applications to throw in the reject pile.

They're not representative of the entire cycle and they operate on a honor system, but they're considered to be accurate and trustworthy, but not representative of the whole as there are only a select few that fill them out.

Edit - scooped.

Please don't waste your own money as well attending this school. You'll wipe out your savings.

thanks guys! really appreciate it. I know its a bad school, but I know people who have transferred to better schools from it which is a strong possibility for me. As long as I get in everything will work out.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
