Well, that at least explains why so many of my classmates chose UVA over Duke. Yet, considering that both schools compete for largely the same crop of students, I'm curious why Duke doesn't engage in bidding wars with UVA (anecdotally, they rarely, if ever, match).

Damn, that many people paying sticker at NYU? I get that's a solid school but I would cry at the thought of sticker in NYC.

When picking a school you shouldn't care what other people are paying, what you're paying is what matters.

Besides, if you want to get an accurate measure for how much money a school doles out you also need to consider average scholarship (which, iirc, tends to be inversely proportional to % receiving scholarships).

The thing about these lists is they don't indicate the amount of the grants. The schools that have more people paying sticker can also have more people with substantial grants (more than half tuition). I've noticed this trend in the reports before.

This is a fair point, though I do think, on the grand scheme of not sending out kids shackled in debt, that it is better to spread the wealth over a wide range than confine it to a select few. Just my 2¢, though.

Aren't HYS pretty much the only schools that offer need-based? I would presume this is merit aid.

That can't be right, as each of HYS appears with a sizable % on the list, and none of the three offer merit aid.

It must be merit + need-based aid.

It is any grant given from the school. Also most schools median grants are very low like 15-25k

+1 I for one would not feel good about subsidizing full schollies for a handful with sticker tuition. It's more equitable to spread it around in my opinion.

Duh, of course, you're right. I should have said it can't be just need-based.

u're missing the point. full scholarships go to deserving individuals. e.g. Eagle scouts with a volunteer exp in south africa with a slightly higher LSAT than the rest.

Penn, UCLA, Boalt, UMich separate need-based aid from merit-aid.

Cornell, Duke, NYU, Columbia lump it together.

That's per year though. You could qualify for another 15k-25k need based grant your second year.

this is true
imo, getting a $30k grant is virtually the same as paying sticker when sticker debt at repayment is $300k
you have to factor in % receiving scholarships AND grant size

per year, 2013
more stats here: http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... 1&t=225091

UVA $25,000
Yale $22,322
Stanford $21,938
Northwestern $20,000
NYU $20,000
Harvard $19,800
Duke $18,000
Georgetown $18,000
Penn $16,523
Berkeley $16,358
Michigan $15,000
Chicago $15,000
Cornell $15,000
Columbia $12,000

Do they give any significant amount of need-based aid? (I have no personal experience with this, it just seems that the only schools that are talked about as doing significant need-based are HYS, but I could be wrong.)

40k (over 3 years), 20k (1L year, would have to do FAFSA again following year), 22k (same as UCLA), 0k (but had a friend who received 15k, but would also have to do FAFSA).

how are "sholarships" actually accounted for? it seems to me they would simply offset an amount due schools dont technically give anything.. this could help explain the fast rate of tuition inflation

also just building on my last post

consider that in grant size, chi is at the top of the list, nyu at the bottom
yet median chi grant is $45k to nyu's $60k
and median chi debt at graduation is $154k (85% of students) to nyu's $147k (80% of students)

lot of things that could be going on here to account for these results, but my point is that % of people paying sticker isn't that insightful on the whole, at least in isolation from other factors

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what do the percentages mean if it's supposed to be a median? Also, wouldn't median debt at graduation be a more meaningful way of looking at which schools are more cost friendly than the median grant/who is paying sticker?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
