US News rankings coming March 10th
http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/c ... oming-soon
I didn't see anything about this on TLS yet so I thought I'd share. Possible repost.
Edit: This might belong in Choosing a Law School.

Will this be the first year they're included? I'd guess t1 but not t20.yeslekkkk wrote:I'm interested to see how UCI fares.
I don't think there will be any really interesting changes in the t14. Maybe Duke will pass Michigan, or Berkeley will slide a bit, or Penn will tie NYU or something. US News loves ties.

Hoping Schools with egregious transfer practices get crushed. Would love to See Georgetown out of T14 and GW out of T25.

I have some inside info, so I almost feel like I'm cheating with my "predictions." But look for UChi to find itself all alone at #4, for UC Irvine to debut between #40 and #45, and for an unexpected rise for U Pittsburgh.Tr3 wrote:Predictions?

I do too But it would adulterate the rankings predictions contest of which we are sponsoring a Grand Prize, so I can't share until after the rankings, at which point no one will care. What a Catch-22!

Has the USNWR updated their formula to put more weight on employment outcomes, and ratio of those/total cost and, closely related, scholarship generosity?

Yes the competition will be on TLS. I think North's rules are you have to have 100 TLS posts to enter.
We talked about the prize in our Q&A thread a bit. I'll try to find when I have more time if no one else beats me to the punch.

What is the prize? I have seen the contest before but never followed it.

No. Because I doubt he is going to close the poll tomorrow being that he hasn't even put it up yet. Again, his name here is North, not my rule I'd ask him.buckiguy_sucks wrote:So you're saying I should post 70 times today? /sarcasmMikeSpivey wrote: I think North's rules are you have to have 100 TLS posts to enter.

I think all of these things should be taken into account, and I don't see why USN doesn't at least try to add/modify a few of the factors it uses in ranking schools. It doesn't seem like their rankings have kept up with the current law school model/legal landscape.flawschoolkid wrote:Hoping Schools with egregious transfer practices get crushed. I also think ATL had a great opportunity to really make a decent rankings list (albeit, an unnecessary one), but flubbed by letting # of SCOTUS clerks and federal judges account for ~14% of its methodology.
Just some thoughts

I think ATL only counted clerks so heavily because it's one of the only ways you can put Yale (to a lesser extent possibly H/S, not sure) on top while trying to base so much on employment outcomes.runinthefront wrote:DavidConeSplitter wrote:Has the USNWR updated their formula to put more weight on employment outcomes, and ratio of those/total cost and, closely related, scholarship generosity?I think all of these things should be taken into account, and I don't see why USN doesn't at least try to add/modify a few of the factors it uses in ranking schools. Yale lags behind some other t14s in biglaw and has higher underemployment. But if you put Yale at #7 or something, your rankings seem to lose credibility. I'm talking raw numbers, a lot of Yale grads aren't chasing typical employment outcomes.

Re: US News rankings coming March 10th
This is the irony of rankings. We want a better methodology, but refuse to accept a list that doesn't fit our preconceived notions. The result is that every site has to torture its data until HYS come out on top, then T14, and so on.Dog wrote:Yale lags behind some other t14s in biglaw and has higher underemployment. Re: US News rankings coming March 10th
I hope that US News does not follow the lead of Above the Law and include cost in its ratings. Since many people do not pay sticker including cost can damage the usefulness of the ratings.
For example:
Imagine a student is choosing between two schools, a highly prestigious school at sticker, a less prestigious school at half price. This is not an uncommon scenario and renders the ratings useless for comparing these choices, if the sticker price is a factor. The appropriate question to ask is if the difference in price is worth the additional prestige.
