If you have a simple question- let's say about receiving a refund for an application fee after you get a fee waiver.

Is it necessary to email back a "Thank you" or is this considered annoying and spamming the entire admissions department?

Not necessary. I wouldn't.

I always send a thank you out of habit... It's a confirmation you have received their reply. It's a common courtesy in real life.

Especially for simple questions. They have a lot of emails coming in and out this time of year.

Okay....seems to be no consensus. I guess this is just one of those things that varies from person to person.

I've been sending thank you emails to only individual email addresses (like admission directors or deans) and have not been sending them to the general "admissions" emails since I figure those are mailing lists and probably have a bunch of people on them.

^ That is what I do. Also saying thanks after someone answers a personal question is never going to be viewed poorly
