It lasted far longer than anyone should ever have had to endure.

Okay, so I just got a 170 on my Dec LSAT and refined my list. My GPA is 3.64 from a top public school with an econ major. Is this too many apps?? They are all done and ready to go but they are going to cost an arm and a leg (fee waivers for almost all safety schools). What would you strike off (except Stanford- I know it's not realistic but my dad wants me to apply and he keeps ignoring my "special snowflake syndrome" explanations):

University of California, Berkeley, School of Law
Boston University School of Law (Safety)
The University of Chicago Law School (reach)
Columbia University School of Law (reach)
Cornell Law School
Duke University School of Law
Emory University School of Law (Safety)
The George Washington University Law School (Safety)
Georgetown University Law Center
The University of Michigan Law School
New York University School of Law (Reach)
Northwestern University School of Law
Notre Dame Law School (Safety)
University of Southern California, Gould School of Law (Safety but I like California)
Stanford University Law School (Unrealistic reach, I know)
The University of Texas School of Law
The University of Alabama School of Law (Safety?)
University of Pennsylvania Law School
University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law
Vanderbilt Law School
University of Virginia School of Law
University of Washington School of Law (Safety)
Washington University School of Law (Safety)
William and Mary (Safety)

ALSO.....for which would you write supplemental "Why X" essays for??

Cal is just as much of a reach as Stanford for you

I would drop all the safety schools. If you don't have good T14 options with those numbers then something is fundamentally wrong and you should just not go to law school

I would apply to the T14 and maybe UCLA/USC if your love of CA truly knows no bounds and then call it a cycle

Congrats on the 170, nicely done

Yeah, totally agree about Cal. Darn my GPA...... well BigZuck you've convinced me to strike off Washington and Lee and University of Washington. Still going to keep Emory and George Washington as my safety schools. Thanks for the advice.

There really shouldn't be such a thing as a "safety school" for law school purposes. You should only attend schools that allow you a reasonable chance to achieve your goals for a reasonable amount of money. With a 3.64/170 you will probably be able to do this in the lower T14. At worst, you should be doing full-ride at a regional where you have ties.

ETA: I'd get rid of everything outside the T20 that you don't have ties to.

No, not rich. Just sent a ton of emails for merit-based fee waivers and was granted about 25 or so..... so it's not going to be that expensive. And hey, if it saves me money in the long-run.....

still costs 28 bucks each. I didnt have to pay one fee, but the LSAC fee will getcha. 28x37 is over 1000 bucks just to submit apps...

FWIW, the FAFSA apparently only has room for ten school codes.

To be fair, someone with a score in the upper 160's and a GPA in the mid 3's would probably have to blanket the T14 (maybe excluding HYS). When you factor in UCLA/Vandy/UT + a few strong regionals, the number of apps can add up pretty quickly.

Yeah, with anybody with a 170 and a decent GPA should blanket the T14 and apply to strong regionals where they hope to practice. That's it.

I'd add "and where they have ties" to the bolded; I don't think it's necessarily a good idea to apply to a regional where you've never lived just because you'd be willing to work there after graduation.

Very true. OP would be crazy to waste a 170 on any strong regional he has no ties to. Even with a significant scholarship, it would be tough to justify.

I'm at around 20 apps and that's probably where I'll stay. Btw, not that it's relevant but I'm a woman, not a guy ;)

On another note, who thinks its preferable to do mid T-14 (like NYU of U Penn) at sticker price versus low T-14 (Cornell, Georgetown) at a small (let's say 60K total for argument's sake) scholarship?

depends what you wanna do. But sticker is almost never a desirable option.

Also, why does the bolded matter to how many apps you send?

Nobody.
Cornell with scholly > Penn at sticker, unless deadset on Philly biglaw. But then you should just retake for Penn scholly.

I think 20 is much more reasonable than 37, good luck with everything.

Sticker price for any school is hard to justify. Low T14 schools generally have very comparable Biglaw placement as the schools ranked above them. The exception would be Georgetown, which lags behind the rest of the T14 and has comparable job placement as schools like Vandy and UCLA.

So if you are deciding between a school like Penn at sticker and Northwestern with $$, you have to ask yourself how much you value prestige or the opportunity to live in a specific city/region.

Additionally, a 170 should get you major money at lower T14 schools.
