Resume Help

Postby VMeyer4 » Mon Dec 01, 2014 11:46 am

Hi all,
I would just like a little advice on my resume. Everything is centered in Word, so right now that is not an issue. Can anyone see any formatting issues or if I should put dates elsewhere, etc. or even if I need to add more? Any input is appreciated. Thank you!

Under experience, most recent comes first. Other than that, formatting looks fine, dates are in the correct place.

I would def. drop the "skills" section, employers hate that. Also make sure you get it down to one page if it isn't already.

Just for clarification it is my law school application resume. Should there be more description under my extracurriculars or no? Thanks again!

That's really going to depend on the school. Some had space on the application to list the extracurricular stuff and just said to post a work resume, other schools wanted both. Some Wanted Leadership positions as well with descriptions of skills learned/used during that time. I ended up reformatting and doing this for most of the apps.

That's Basically the leadership addendum to my work resume with non leadership activities

Just so you know, my objective scores are not top tier. I'm not some billy bad-ass. I know most upper tier applications probably want more of a CV and certainly don't want the skills section, but I left it in mine because it's a work resume.

I hope when you say "centered," you don't mean all center justified.

Bold is added/edited stuff.

Some of your phrasing in the bullet points sounds pretty lame (don't specify that you used pipets, for example. Generic "lab equipment" sounds so much better.) Then in other spots it just totally lacks context or explanation. Stand-squat tests? On whom? For whom? Why? Looking for what? In what setting? Rephrase more like "Conducted physical strength measurement tests on geriatric volunteer subjects to determine effects of XXXX on YYYYY."

Okay, thank you for the advice! Can this be longer than a page long or no?

No. (Unless you have more than like 6-7 impressive grownup jobs or a bunch of impressive publications.)
I have 2 schools, 6 jobs, and 4 volunteer gigs on my resume and it's still one page. You absolutely do not need more than one page.

This is what mine looked like last year, genericized and redacted. (I'm too lazy to redact the current version, but I dropped 2 of the older jobs and added my law school clinic and 2L summer government agency)
