Definitely check out the thread linked above, but just in response to this bit: I don't know exactly how many schools you consider to be "overboard," but applying to many of the schools within your range of possibility numbers-wise, even if you probably wouldn't attend some of them, can be very helpful for negotiating scholarship amounts.
