My GPA is around 2.5. I will be retaking the LSAT in October and reapplying to the University of Denver in the fall. I hope to score in the high 160's. Does anyone have any opinions as to my chance of being admitted with a higher LSAT score but such a low GPA?

I see 12 admits with 2.x GPAs and LSATS in the low 160's. I bet if you scored high 160's, you'd be in w/ a little $.

I live in Denver and have a good job and child. I do not have the luxury of applying or moving anywhere else. DU also has an evening program and that is what I would have to do.

Do you really want to practice law then? Because it does not assure financial security. I hate to intrude, but roughly how much do you make right now? Why do you want to practice law? What are your aspirations for a legal career? What's your LSAT score, or at least, what range are you PTing at?

I don't mean this to dissuade you from your goals. A legal education can be quite valuable, but what schools fail to tell you is that you must be very smart in choosing that education for it to be valuable.

I am sure that I want to practice law. I have been a paralegal for almost 5 years. I already understand the day does not end at 5pm and weekend work is often required. I already prepare pleadings and research medical records and all of the fun stuff. However, it is not enough anymore. I want to ask the questions at depositions and persuade a jury at trial. I already do a lot of the work for attorneys they just sign their name to it.

I am aware that I will not make a ton of money just by going to law school. And the debt that comes along with a law degree can be overwhelming. I make over 50k per year and thought that if I can stay with my firm and go to school in the evenings they may offer me a position as an associate or recommend me to another firm. I am interested in insurance defense.

Unfortunately, it takes some of us a bad undergraduate career, lots of job experience and a kid to figure out that law school is the right choice.

You seem to have researched well and considered it with much thought. Still, what are Denver's employment numbers and average salary?

As to low GPAs, I'm certain you could still be admitted if you do well enough on the LSAT. In fact, it's probably a better chance these next couple years than any, I only see application numbers continuing to fall.

Why are the employment numbers or average salary relevant? He clearly knows he wants to do this. I'm sure he'll find a way.

And to be honest, even if applications do continue to fall, that's just going to provoke mitigation in the form of class capping or other measures that will make it so that getting in isn't a free-for-all. I'd say last year was the best year for applications.

Look, VREBEL, we all know law school is an awful investment (unless you've got the numbers to either get a scholly or get in at a T14 or both and even then...) but still, two things:

1) Do your thing, man. If you're that involved with the law already and have a genuine passion for it and UD is the most practical choice, go for it. Pursue it. And be ready for what may come along with that (though I'm sure you are).

2) If you jack up your LSAT score into the mid-high 160's, I'm sure you'll be fine. Especially with the softs that you'd be bringing to the table.
