With 49 votes, the consensus is..... 173.6. If people keep voting, I'll keep averaging.

With 67 votes, the weighted average has inched up to 173.8. Also, blatant TLS anti-177 trolling.

With 87 votes it's still.... 173.8. I think we're approaching a pretty solid sample size here.

Luckily, it was primarily for my amusement/curiosity, so I don't really care if anyone else cares.

I took the LSAT quite some time ago, got a 173, and I've been pondering the value of a retake ever since. In my case, grades (3.3x) keep me out of HYS no matter what and I've got the GI Bill to reduce the importance of scholarships, so a retake probably would provide minimal benefits, even if I scored a 180. It might marginally help my chances at CC.

On the other hand, if I was sitting on a 3.7+, a retake seems like it would make a ton of sense.

Bottom line is that 173 sounds just about right as the no man's land for retaking.

edit to add: The LSAT's a very learnable test, law school at sticker is too expensive, and the legal hiring climate is terrible right now and will likely remain very poor. It's not elitist to say that one needs to score in the 99th percentile, it's a realistic assessment of what one needs to do to make a JD worth pursuing ITE. A lot of very smart kids at very good schools are getting burned right now because they took on too much (non-dischargeable) debt to go to law school.
