Cherry picking easy classes; HYS

Post by hiltopp01 » Tue Jun 11, 2013 8:32 am

Got a 176 LSAT, but cherry picked easy classes during my time in undergrad. Literally searched for the easiest classes to fulfill my major, but got near 4.0. Will this have a detrimental effect on HYS admissions, namely H? Also took a couple P/Fs. Some of my classes include "History of Rock and Roll" and the like.

International Studies Major at T20 Private, to add info; mediocre softs, PS, LOR; clean C&F

Planning to apply the day after 9/15

Won't matter, unless your LORs say you're a lazy sack of garbage. Although it can help to have done some major piece of writing, like a thesis. That crap is especially important to Yale, which is the only school with a chance of caring that you took BS classes.

That's good to hear..
Luckily, the courses taught by my LOR writers were somewhat less BS-y, and I did well in them.

Oh, and I'm applying K-JD

If you have above a 3.89, your in at H. YS will depend on your softs but your numbers put you in good shape.

Why not the Ruby? OP's numbers are pretty solid.

You played the law school game well. Harvard will love to have you, especially now that apps are down and they still have a huge class to fill. S/Y will be tougher, but because of your lack of softs--not because of your easy classes. I took a bunch of easy classes, too, and got into both H and S with lower numbers. My advice: take time off. Build up a resume. You'll get into H but when job interviews come around, you'll probably regret not having done anything to distinguish yourself from the hordes of classmates with the same amount of Ps/Hs.

yale will care about your easier classes because they have so many applicants with 4.0's to choose from. I wouldn't bank on it; also, as Cicero mentioned, a thesis would be a good call. If you're from CA and can demonstrate substantial interest in SLS then you're in there too. H is a lock, as are CCN w/ huge $$ and down.

You major in a technical field, get a really high GPA, and then work in California for a bit.

this is one solid route. you can also go the PI route. a few friends were successful at SLS w/ high GPA's and a very strong PI bent app, even k-jd, but they had a ton of extracurriculars and internships in public interest law or w/ government. they also went to cali UG's. two people were admitted to stanford but WL at H, out at Y.

similarly, several extremely qualified candidates (3.9+/175+) got YH but WL at S this cycle. so they truly do look for something different

"Hard UG classes" is a fucking flame.

How can they even tell one class is more rigorous than another class?

Cause "it's higher numbered than other classes" ?

give me a brake.

Depends on which professor is reading your app at that moment. They care way less about "rigor of classes" than they do about academic recommendations, though, so focus on those.

Literally is no way to tell. I was in a class with the SAME EXACT numbering (and subject of course) as one of my friends from a different school (his being a super TTT and mine being a modest TT) and my class was WAY easier, almost like a joke.

H no.

Y makes it a point on their website to say they evaluate majors and courses, which I believe. Mainly because they have the ability to turn down people with a 3.9+/174+. YS is never a guarantee on numbers alone.

So basically you need a 3.9+ with all 300+ lvl courses your junior and senior year? NO BS classes like music or Drama?

Unconscionable, disgusting, anti-Music major trolling.
