We have a "Course Portal" that has all our class information (syllabus's, readings professors put online, etc.) that I never abbreviate to CP when I mention it in my notes because I'd feel dirty. :|

ATL Top 50 Law School Rankings 2013

Postby rickgrimes69 » Wed May 01, 2013 12:49 pm

Above the law is now throwing their hat into the law school rankings game. Their methodology focused primarily on positive outcomes, with cost, employment score, and desirable job placement constituting 75% of the ranking. Here are the results:

http://abovethelaw.com/careers/law-school-rankings/

1. Yale (Most SCOTUS Clerks; Most Federal Clerks)
2. Stanford
3. Harvard
4. Chicago
5. Penn (Best Employment Score; Best Quality of Jobs)
6. Duke
7. University of Virgina
8. Columbia
9. Berkeley
10. NYU
11. Cornell
12. Michigan
13. Northwestern
14. UT-Austin
15. Vandy
16. Georgetown

18. Notre Dame
19. UGA

It's ridiculously stupid for them to give 7.5% to SCOTUS clerks (They should've just used federal clerkships) and 7.5% for active federal judges, but other than that I like the rankings they use.

I think Alabama belongs in the T25. Nice instate tuition, 71% LST score with small percentage of that being school-funded and a handful of federal clerkship jobs.

This is actually far more legitimate than I'd expect from ATL

My school is worse off so these rankings are obviously shit.

Also, it is clear that they used those judge statistics because otherwise their rankings would be CPD for the top 3. I mean, the justification was just awful for as why those were distinguished from the whole of clerkships and then the fact that they were given such a shockingly disproportionate value relative to their actual numerical existence makes me completely ignore the validity of anyone who thought that would be a good ranking method.

I like it and hope they keep to do it. That said, it is flawed. Couple things I'd change:

1) Use firms of 100+ instead of NLJ data. It's far more useful and accurate.
2) Include clerkships with state's highest court, if that's available
3) I'm a little confused by the "Cost" methodology. Are they just using tuition as the metric for cost? Because some schools are incredibly stingy and others very generous. I couldn't really understand what they meant when they explained their methodology here.

Solid effort though, I like it.

Problem with these rankings is that they don't correct for self-selection of those with prior work experience into particular schools. That is why Penn and NU occasionally outperform peers.
