How are these softs

Postby homie1515 » Thu Mar 14, 2013 12:19 am

Im a white male straight out of UG. I have been working as the Chief Brand Manager for the past 3 years in which i report directly to the President of the company, I also have started a company that subsequently failed. Also, I work as a volunteer at the Humane society.

Nothing amazing. There are some ppl with crazy resumes. The work experience will help at some schools.

Just worry about your LSAT (since I assume your GPA is fixed if you are working)

If it makes you feel any better, my softs end after your first sentence.

Just kill the LSAT.

Softy don't matter in the slightest bit. I went on this first undergrad trip in us history to North Korea and I haven't gotten into one reach yet (check my profile for my numbers). Killing the LSAT is your best (and safest) bet

There. Hard evidence that softs don't matter.

Your softs are pretty much irrelevant...

The fact that you find this a good soft is probably your problem. Re-apply next year and focus your app on something YOU did that shows you can do something beyond sign up for a program to a far away land.

This.
Had you organized the trip, it might be more impressive, but, just enrolling in something someone else organized, it about as impressive as going to disneyland.

also true. There are softs that matter, and it's entirely possible to get into a reputable school while being 10+ points below the LSAT and 1 whole point below the GPA median solely due to softs (I know of a person who did; can't out the softs, but they're impressive, though not nobel, olympic, etc.)

where would someone go about explaining their soft? In an addendum or just on their resume?

generally resume, occasionally personal statement, rarely addendum
It depends a bit on the soft; if it's extracurricular, it'd be resume, it it's drug-addled abusive parents, personal statement; if it's because you've escaped from a war-torn country where you were an oppressed minority, an addendum might work too. But then, these aren't really the kind of softs that make a difference.

Meh. Everyone who outperforms their numbers got dat special snowflake syndrome . It goes both ways. Yet, if I were to get into H under both medians I'd have the same outlook as you do. 8)

None. No one will care. It's all about that GPA/LSAT.

But really, anyone could be passionate about anything. It's great that you're doing what you do, but law school admission is different. They will only see you capable of helping the autistic if and only if you got the intelligence and work ethic to do so. What do I mean by intelligence? LSAT. What do I mean by work ethic? UGPA.

Rhodes/Truman/Marshall/Mitchell scholarship, URM (AA, MA), Army veteran, Fulbright fellowship, Teach 4 Americaa (but this is getting overrated), and inventor of something random crap, and MAYBE a PHD is something

TLS wisdom: good softs = Rhodes etc. scholarship, Olympic athlete, something else I forget...

Thing is, those are good softs - but they're not going to up your LSAT score. Your softs could well break a tie between you and someone with the same numbers and no softs, or less good softs. But they're not going to make you a stronger candidate than someone who has better numbers than you.

ETA: Scooped! I was thinking of the military.
