The Paper Chase isn't even a good indicator of what HLS is like anymore. Don't watch it or read 1L - they're no longer relevant and will just freak you out.

And don't do this to yourselves. Enjoy this summer before entering law school. Everyone I know who did any of these prep things burned out well before finals and didn't do as well as the people who put in a respectable but sane amount of work during the semester.

Read some books for fun, exercise a bit (good advice for law school as well - it's very sedentary and stressful), watch some TV, and relax.

I'm sure it doesn't hurt to do these things (except you'll spend a lot of time on it that could be used on things that are fun), but I also don't think it will give you any advantages. I came to law school without a clue. After a few days I called a friend who was a 3L at a different school to ask what the hell these outlines were everyone was talking about. I honestly don't think it made a shred of difference. I did better than most people, and I don't know what else I could have gotten out of law school, tbh.

I fully agree, these things don't have to be done. Although having more money saved up is something I should have taken more seriously.

Thanks for the thread OP. I'm already skimming through GTM and will think about the other things on the list. Also polishing up resume and doing basic research on potential 1L SA firms in my home market

I would like to reiterate having a chunk in savings for a rainy day. It could very well save your semester.

Some I did, some I wish I did.

0. Don't worry about prepping beforehand. You won't do it correctly.
1. Get your car tuned up.
2. Go to doctor and request a year's worth of refills. Chances are you won't get a chance to go back.
3. See #2 for dentist, optometrist, etc.
4. Learn at least 3 different routes to school.
5. Set up your home office/study space.
6. Learn 5-10 quick, easy, cheap recipes.
7. Buy two suits, just slightly above your budget along with assorted conservative ties (and the equivalent bits and baubles for women). Interviews are not the time to show your pizzazz. One may spring up before you get the chance to go shopping and have things altered.
8. Get into a maintainable exercise routine. 1L ten and 2L twenty are no jokes.
9. Spend time with family and friends. It will be a rude awakening to them.
10. Learn to trust yourself, love yourself, and rely on yourself. There will be times when you dig deeper than you ever thought possible.

Admittedly a 0L here. Starting in the fall. However, thought I'd pass on something a friend of mine told me who just graduated from a T-10. I'm paraphrasing a little, but this was the gist:

"Ignore everyone who tries to scare you with 'once school starts, your life is OVER. you will never see friends or family again!' It's a myth that gets traction from people who go to law school straight from undergrad and are shocked they actually have to study and not sleep till 1 in the afternoon. If you've worked a real job before, you'll be fine."
