How much would applying 9/1 next cycle help me?

Postby Chambo » Sun Feb 03, 2013 2:41 pm

I applied in late December and early January with 3.58/166. I wasn't 100% sold on going to school next year, but I had some waivers so I figured I would see what happens. I know this was pretty late, and I was wondering what kind of improvement I could possibly see over my current results if I applied 9/1 next cycle.

Results:
UVA- Out
UMich- No word (expecting an out)
GW- Waitlist
UMN- Waitlist
W&M- 10k/year
W&L- 35k/yr
Wake- 32k/yr

I'm considering an LSAT re-take, but I'm mainly curious about how applying four months earlier could help. I realize it's complicated because of falling application numbers, and possibly reduced class sizes etc... but any input would be helpful

Best case scenario with those numbers is that you get stuck paying sticker at a bottom tier T14, which is not a good spot to be in. Definitely retake.

Early: http://mylsn.info/8h4blh
Mid: http://mylsn.info/7cipbg
Late: http://mylsn.info/0vj4rn

UVA: Out
UMich: Very small chance, most likely out
GW: Not great, but better chance of getting in, or in off WL. You may even get in off WL this cycle depending on how it goes. Still, paying sticker at GW isn't the best place to be.
UMN: Again a bit of a gamble, but probably get in with this cycle.
W&M: As you can see, depending on time of app submitted the avg $$ amount seems to increase. Goes with the wisdom that the earlier you submit, better chance of admission and $$
W&L: Money seems to stay avg with app time, but who knows
Wake: Same as W&M

Your best bet is to study hard and retake in the summer, or at the latest October. In any event, to answer your question, the earlier you apply the better.

Youre very likley out at GW and UMN UNLESS their median LSAT drops to 166. I dont think applying early would have changed that. There really are just a handful of non URM under both median seats at those schools, and I doubt applying early next cycle would make a much of a difference (assuming you dont have amazing softs). Either way, youd likely be paying sticker, and it would be hard to argue it would be worth it to attend even if you got in. Generally, for the schools you are below both medians, you would go from a very small shot to a small shot by applying early next fall.

If you can stand waiting, scoring higher would of course make a big difference (even 1 point) . If you dont score higher, your cycle would probably shake out about the same. I would retake in June for sure, and then make a decision about sitting out when you get that score back.

It's hard to say what will happen next cycle, but I'm not convinced that an early app this cycle is so much better than a Dec/Jan app with the same stats. I guess we'll see, though. You should retake and enjoy much better options, though.

I don't think there's any difference in applying on September 1 and applying on October 30, after the October LSAT results are in. You could take the LSAT in June, and again in October, and will apply early and have a great cycle.

3.58/172 puts you in at NYU and maaaybe Columbia. Hell, even 3.58/170 could get you UVA and Mich, and you might sneak into NYU off the WL. It happened last year with that set of numbers.
