How long before you e-mail schools

Asking about the application status checker updates. I have some schools who update it daily and others who haven't updated it since it went complete. Is it appropriate to e-mail/call and be like "Hi, I was just wondering what my application status is since I notice it hasn't updated since X date" or is that a good way to get a negative mark on your record?

Some schools never update past Complete. Check the TLS applicant threads for each school to see what their SOPs are.
