Applying ED 2x in the same cycle?

Postby andres » Wed Dec 19, 2012 4:38 pm

Is it possible to apply ED a second time after being waitlisted from your first ED school? For example, let's say you were waitlisted at UVA, can you then apply ED to Georgetown?

For the most part, yes. UVA and GULC are really the ones that make multiple EDs possible, since both accept ED applications until March.

Many other schools (Cornell, NYU, etc.) have ED options that are only open until November. These schools, like UVA and GULC, typically have language in their ED contract or on their website indicating that it's only binding so long as you're in ED consideration. Once you get moved to the RD pool (for example, by being waitlisted) you are no longer bound by the ED restrictions.

Both Cornell and NYU accept ED applications until November and then issue decisions in December. You can't apply to both ED, it's not possible. But UVA and GULC promise a quick response no matter when you apply. So it's possible to, at most, apply to three schools ED in one cycle:

(Cornell/NYU/etc.) -> UVA -> GULC

There is one notable exception to this. Northwestern has indicated that they have a problem with you applying to another school ED, even if you are not accepted through ED there. This may be due to a misunderstanding on Northwestern's part, since schools permitting ED beyond November is a new thing, but it's their position. (I'm not sure they can legally prohibit you from applying to other ED programs after they've rejected you, but as a 0L you probably don't want to test such things.) So I wouldn't try this with Northwestern.
