Thanking professor for LOR

I know you should send a thank you card, but seeing how they probably won't get it until spring semester starts because it would be sent to their office at university, would a thank you email also be in order, or is that just redundant?

If your university is still open for administrative functions over the break, maybe you can put the sealed envelope inside a bigger envelope addressed to the prof's department and include a letter saying "please forward to Prof.'s home address."

Can you get the prof's home address from the school's phone book (or online equivalent)? They're often in there. Profs are often also listed in the regular city phone directory. I don't think it would be inappropriate to mail the thank you directly to the prof at home. Nor would it be inappropriate to mail it to the department with the expectation that they won't get it until after the break.
