Addendum for a 3.9?

From what I've read so far, the advice seems to be that you shouldn't include an addendum if your GPA is already pretty strong or if there was nothing too significant that caused a significant drop in grades.

My mother passed away in the Fall of 2009. While my Dad was abroad for the majority of my life on work assignments, she was the one who cared for me and raised me. When she passed away, I took a 30 hour trip back home, attended the funeral, and was back in school within the week (my Dad, who paid for my education, didn't give me a choice). My grades dipped significantly for the fall of 2009 and the spring of 2010.

Without the two semesters, my LSAC GPA goes up from a 3.90 to a 3.96. Is it worth writing an addendum?

No. Plain and simple. You're going to look neurotic to the person reading the addendum, seeing as they'll find little difference between a 3.90 and a 3.96. For all but a few schools, you're above the 75th percentile with a 3.90

+1. Out of curiosity, do you mate with cows? You may want to write a diversity statement about that.
It was actually meant to be spelled cowmaster, but I forgot the s while typing it out. I'm too lazy to make a new account with the proper name.

ETA: Sorry about being a dick OP, I didn't read your full OP and the part about your mom. I thought you were a regular poster under an alt account that was trolling the on topic forums.

That's disappointing: it would be a lot cooler if you did mate with cows.
Also would be a good diversity statement. Better addendum than explaining a 3.9 GPA.

I'm no admissions expert, but you might consider giving it a mention in a PS or DS or ask a recommender you're close to to include a sentence or two on it, depending on the topic. Definitely not an addendum though...

I'm not sure if you're talking about the GPA or the cow sex. I hope it's the cow sex.

No, but if you can work it into your PS that you have a 3.9 despite that happening, you're golden

If anything, write a DS about your mom and mention the timetable. If they want to infer a relationship between the events, let them. But you don't need to bring it up

I thought about writing an addendum to explain how much higher my grades would be if my school offered A+'s. I decided that, all things considered, the addendum should remain a mere thought.

I don't think you need one; but that circumstance certainly seems like the kind of thing that can be effectively integrated into a statement.

I'm sorry for your loss; may peace be with you always.

That would have been the worst addendum in the history of addendums

Dear AdComs,

Grade inflation exists.
