Do you need a good reason to write optional essays?

Is it still helpful to write optional essays even if I don't have anything particularly compelling to say in response to any of the prompts? I could probably come up with something to say to almost any essay, but if I feel like my personal statement is a strong writing sample is it better to let it stand alone and not risk frustrating admissions departments with essays that either wouldn't have much substance or would be major stretches?

Anyone have any advice on this?
