I need a letter of recommendation - Big Stress

Hello all,

I have read this forum for years on my adventure to apply to law school. I completed the October LSAT on Saturday and feel confident in whatever my score may be. My biggest area of stress is coming from getting two letters of recommendation.

I graduated college in 1998. I have never really had an official job. Since college, I have made a very good living as a professional poker player. I have no one to write a letter of recommendation!

I haven't been able to locate a professor from my University. I think they all retired or died by now.

I want to go to law school to make a positive change in the world, but this letter of recommendation thing has me stumped.

Thanks in advance for your advice.....

If you want to make a positive change in the world, don't go to law school. There are lots of things you can do which will actually make a meaningful contribution to society.

Have you had a job since then? 14 years out an academic rec is not going to be that important, but if you have a boss who could write you one that would be sufficient.

PSA: How do you think law school will help you do this? Only go to law school if you want to be a lawyer.

Edit: scooped

I have only found one law school Mississippi College School of Law that doesn't require a letter or recommendation. Jackson, MS looks like a nice town.

However, I really would like to try to apply to other schools.

I did have a letter of recommendation from a Federal Judge, but he died after being arrested. So, that is probably not my best choice.

yeah, I would take a pass on the letter from a dead disgraced federal judge.

Any volunteer work you have done? A volunteer supervisor could write one.

Get a couple of regular volunteer gigs that take some skills/brainpower/commitment. Stick with them for a while. (Like a year+.) Get LORs from your supervisors.

You've waited this long, you can wait a while longer.

I have two letters of rec now! However, I am wondering if having three will look better.

Can I ask what types of people you ended up getting your letters of rec from (and so quickly)? This post is directly relevant to the interests of a family member. He plays poker and is considering law school, but he has the same problem of never holding a "real job" since graduation. He was already making a living from poker before he graduated from undergrad. He does hold a serious and useful degree from a solid school, but is once again caught by his lack of work experience.

I have no clue what this picture of a cartoon character on fire means. Could someone please explain it?

I was able to secure two letters of recommendation. One is from a sports writer who is a very good writer who has known me personally and professionally for several years. The second letter is from a respected minister that I work with on several social causes.

Making the switch from poker to law school isn't that much of a switch. Both are big social games.....

^ I disagree. Law school is about research and writing. If you don't enjoy that, then this might not be right for you. But I suppose you always have poker to fall back on.

I have to suggest that writing is more than just putting pen to paper. Writing is a social process, even in its most solidarity situation.

Okay if you say so.
