Letters of recommendation

Schools require 2 but say you can submit up to four. Does it look better if you have more than 2?

Personally, I prefer happy medium(3). 4 sounds too much for me as ad com might get easily bored in reading your additional lor unless 4 are unique and strong...

Not really.

If you can reasonably anticipate that there will be a difference in strength between the LORs, it would be preferable just to include the two strongest.

This involves some guesswork, but you should be able to make reasonably informed guesses by asking your profs the right questions. For instance, don't simply ask a prof if she can write you a recommendation -- ask if she feels she will be able to write you a strong recommendation.
