How could it not be? Being published implies that someone viewed your work as worth publishing. Being self-published implies that you couldn't find anyone to take it. It's not going to be a negative but no way is it the same as actually being published by a publishing company. That wouldn't make any sense.

I know a girl who self-published a young adult book that was picked up by a local school district and took off from there. So, if the book did very well, I don't think the fact that it was self-published should hurt you. Especially not if it's as popular as Prozac Nation.

In my opinion, self-publishing is an interesting soft, but not necessarily a strong soft. Probably depends upon what you wrote more than how well it did with respect to sales. Many self-publish to augment their professional reputation in a way that exceeds mere puffery. The self published work is often handed out to current & prospective clients to build confidence among existing customers & attract new clients. Consider sending the admissions office a copy of your published work if you think that it will impress them favorably.
