Perhaps more eye-roll frestrating than funny. When I mentioned I had been accepted into law school an aunt gifted me with a Perry Mason CD collection.

A woman informed me that her daughter almost went to U Chicago for law school but ultimately decided Marquette was a better fit. Sounded pretty legit to me.

Lolololol. "she had a great shot at Biglaw but decided that unemployment was a better fit."

Twist: Because she knew you'd have a better chance of playing a lawyer on TV than being one IRL.

At my current undergrad I was talking to a friend about studying for the LSAT, and another girl that was there said:
"Oh my boyfriend took the LSAT one day just for fun and scored the maximum, because he just knows a lot about the constitution." LOL

"I hear law school is a really good investment. You can do lots of things with a law degree, right?"

Me to Ditzy Broad ("DB"): "What made you decide to come to law school?"

DB: "I love public speaking and I really like to argue."

Me: "Okay ..."

DB: "Plus, I was an English major in college but found out I really hate to write!"

Being a lawyer seems like the ideal profession for her.

Sounds like an intercity English teacher to me...

Never said teaching was easy, but if you love to argue and hate writing, you're probably better off teaching urban kids than becoming a lawyer. Let's face it, less than 10% of the time spent on a case is actually in court, and you're not even arguing, really, just asking questions and yelling the word "objection" a bunch of times before it sticks. By contrast, you basically have to argue with kids on a daily basis as a teacher, and most of the writing you actually have to do is disciplinary paperwork.

And spelling tests, of course.

Though travelling between cities to teach English must get tiring...

Relax, no need to get worked up. I was half-joking when I wrote that post, though I believe a lot of what I said has some merit. It's hard work motivating urban kids to learn without losing your temper or disciplining them, and most litigation work involves a lot of reading and writing in a cubicle/office, not arguing and public speaking.

I talked to my UG's prelaw advisor for the first time recently. She asked me what schools I was considering since I made it a point to avoid any names.

She said "You can never be too optimistic, that doesn't exist in law school admissions. Unless you're applying to Yale."

Me: "Of course not, I try to be pragmatic. Columbia, on the other hand..."

I didn't disagree with you in my post, and I don't disagree with you. It takes a lot of skill to teach right, and I commend those who can consistently pull it off and still wear a smile. Unfortunately, the best teachers are the best, not the norm, and most do not generally teach in the city (unless through programs like TFA, Jumpstart, PeaceCorp, etc.). They either go suburban or private, where the work environment is less stressful and the salary/ benefits are much better.

Just stop.
