Lot's of people mistake Upenn with Penn state. Also whenever a school name begins with 'university of...' the prestige takes a hit for the layman.

Just for the lulz.

I'm surprised a lot of people think UChicago has lay prestige. My experience has shown the opposite (West Coast).

Here's my rankings:
Harvard
Princeton Law
Yale
Stanford
Georgetown
Columbia
Berkeley
Cornell
Penn
Duke
Northwestern
NYU
Chicago
Michigan
Virginia

My guess on "lay" prestige.

Harvard
Yale
Stanford
Columbia
Penn
Duke
Cornell
Northwestern
Berkeley
Georgetown
Virginia
Michigan
Chicago
NYU

You would be surprised at the number of people who do not know that U-Chicago isn't just some small, local college for people who couldn't get into Northwestern, Notre Dame, UIUC, Michigan, Wisconsin, or Minnesota. People think it's on the level of the University of Miami, Seattle University, the University of San Francisco, or the University of Houston, all very good schools, but not thought of as elite.

Colleges with city names in them just aren't thought of as prestigious, which explains the similar regard for NYU.

While lay prestige doesn't do anything for actual legal hiring, it is nice when you tell people where you go to school and they don't ask "why go there over_________ (insert local TTT/state school)?

LOL dude will be a Columbia student. But he's right. People think really highly of Georgetown, although not in DC, apparently.

absolutely. Some people know it to be as rigorous as it is. But my dad was initially surprised that Northwestern wasn't higher ranked than UChi

Concerning Chicago: Before applying to UGs, I actually hadn't ever heard of Chicago. Dunno why Chicago suffers from less prestige than it should have. Maybe for the same reason Penn does (University of...)

A name like "Duke" or "Cornell" or (especially) "Dartmouth" kind of yells prestige and douchebaggery.

Haha.. actually chose CLS + decent scholly over GULC at near full ride. I've never understood GULC's prestige, but some of the people I've talked to put it right next to Harvard.

My favorite joke about going to Columbia:
me: "I'm heading to Columbia next year."
random girl: "Oh wow, that's impressive."
me: "Yeah... the country."
random girl: "Oh... nvm."
^True story. She probably still think I'm heading to Colombia.

As old people die off, and young people pass through the UG application/Law School application/Med School application grinders, I think schools like Duke and Chicago will pick up prestige. People who apply to schools now will see that they are top 10 or top 15 in virtually every program, and as they become adults they will carry these preconceptions with them.

All the current prestige powerhouses will, of course, remain prestige powerhouses. Although I really think UPenn will keep suffering from the U.

Yes. I was even shocked to learn in my late teens that Notre Dame was actually "the University of Notre Dame". I always wondered why it wasn't "Notre Dame University" or "Notre Dame College".

Conversely, I know people who think Boston College is on the same level as Harvard. For that matter, any school in the northeast is seen as prestigious. They might as well be Harvard or Yale.

In the aggregate, schools NOT named after places have more lay prestige. Schools named after people - fictitious or not - are thought to be most prestigious. Stanford, Duke, Vanderbilt, Emory, Columbia, Baylor, Rice, Purdue...

Note: Northwestern can go as high as 8th (or possibly even 7th) on the list. People all over the country know that it's badass. Many people in Chicago believe it's more prestigious than is U-Chicago. The only schools decidedly above Northwestern are HYS, Columbia, Penn Duke, and Cornell.

Outed as not bothering to mention others that don't register with lay prestige brah.... Oh wait... do you go to one of those?

Ok, so PENN and Berk should be in there somewhere...
