Admissions

Postby abc123abc123 » Tue Jul 03, 2012 9:12 pm

Hey everyone!

I am graduationg from Texas and recently got a 162 on the LSAT. Ufortunately, I was an unmotivated idiot in undergrad and have a 2.9. My Personal Statement is looking really good but I was wondering if having such a bad GPA will preculde me from admissions. What can I expect, T1, T2, T3, T4?

Thanks so much

Yes, your GPA will preclude you. You better retake, or it'll just be T3/T4

Bottom T2s at sticker, maybe some money from T3/4s that want your LSAT

162/2.9

Since you're from Texas and I'll assume you want to stay there:

You have a chance to get into Houston
Good chance at SMU part time
Chance at Baylor

If looking a little outside, you might be able to squeak into Tulane/LSU.

You'll really need to get a couple more points to be more competitive. A 165/2.9 will most likely get you into SMU and Houston.

It is actually your LSAT score that precludes you from the top schools. 2.9 is bad but you could still get into UVA or NU with a 173 LSAT or so.

Thank you guy, my gpa is mostly from my early years. Since jr year I have had a 3.3. What do you think about chicago kent or richmond or like rated out of state?

Doesn't matter. You either need a high-160s/170+ LSAT to have a shot at a decent school, or you need to be ready to go to a T3.

No T2/3/4s are going to have good placement out of state. Youll likely get into all TX law schools from Tech down. You should retake for a better shot at UH/SMU/B.

Peace Corps

Postby Mbustamante » Sat Jul 07, 2012 7:29 pm

Hey everyone. Im aiming for 150's on the lsat and have a 3.6. Id like to go to a top school in NY or somewhere on the northeast.

(right now im studying for the lsat while serving in the peace corps.)

Will my Peace Corps service help out a lot? Can i get into a top school with a 3.6 and lsat in 150's? Any specific schools i should aim for?

Thanks.

no, you cannot get into a top school with an LSAT in the 150s, regardless of location.

In NY, top schools would be considered Columbia, NYU, Cornell and maybe Fordham
With a 3.6 you would need to score in the high 160s to get Cornell and would need to break 170 to have a decent shot at Columbia or NYU. You would need to break at least 160 (and then some) to have a realistic chance at Fordham even in a down cycle.

As a general rule (URM excluded), any school that will accept you with an LSAT below 160 is not worth attending

Man this has to be a flame, but on the off-chance it isn't, aim for 180 man. You need at least high 160s to have a decent shot at not being unemployed with 200k debt in four years.

The advice is still sound.

As they should be. The labor market for lawyers is completely fucked. The schools in the Northeast you can reasonably expect to get into with a 3.6/mid-160s -- Dozo, Brooklyn, Northeastern -- have terrifying placement statistics. I don't think it's unreasonable to say it's not worth the risk unless you get high-160s/70s.

can you define "top school" for us? By top school do you mean top 14 or do you just mean Tier 1 schools?

Either way, you will need to hit 160 (for Tier 1 schools) and 169+ for Top 14 schools.

Peace Corps will not help very much.

Are you a URM by any chance?

In your circumstances, the biggest question you need to ask yourself is "where do i want to end up?" Where do you see yourself practicing long term? In Texas or someplace else?

OP is at or above over 30 T2's 75th. I think it is more likely they will get one of Hounston/SMU/Baylor if they have a polished app.
