Top Law Schools

It'll be my first time taking. I have a 3.41 and wanna apply to the T14 (I'm aware I'll need above a 170 to have any shot whatsoever). But I know for splitters (that's what I would be, right?) people always say to apply early. How early is early? I assume August or something? If I'm taking it in October, are my chances already significantly reduced? Or is there a way to like...send your application out before taking the LSAT and then have them wait for it? Or how does it work?

Most ED cycles end in Dec so a Oct score could still allow you to take that route (Early decision, look it up if you aren't familiar. It's binding but gives boost)
June would be better but only if you would be prepared.

Yeah, I wouldn't be prepared by June. If I apply ED, I'd basically have to go there (is that how it works?)...so I'm assuming that means I can only apply to ONE school ED?

Yes, but not to be confused with only applying to 1 law school. You can apply regular to all schools and 1 ED. If ED admits you, if you go to Law school that cycle you must go there. Double check schools your interested in EDing to and check when the cut off is for it.

And all schools do ED? Is there like a site that compiles this information for all the schools or would I have to search them individually?

I'm curious - does applying ED to a school lessen the chance of a good scholly offer? Would they consider you locked in at sticker and see no point to offer financial incentive for attending? Even if they do offer money, are you then unable to leverage a better offer against that original school's in order to negotiate a more favorable deal?

If you get rejected ED from one school you can apply ED somewhere else if it is still before the second school's ED deadline. For example, you could apply ED to UVA which guarantees a 15 day turnaround, and if that doesn't work out apply ED to a second school.

Yes to all. Don't expect any scholarship money if you apply ED. If going at sticker doesn't work for you don't apply ED.

If you ED plan on sticker, the instances of any school giving money to ED admits are extremely few and far between. NW and GW have a full ride for EDs however, but it makes ED more competitive as opposed to a boost to an otherwise marginal application.

Have your apps completely ready to go and perhaps even submitted by mid October OP. When October scores come out your file will automatically be updated and you will be at the top of the Oct. test taker pile.

And regarding ED, you can ED to at least 3 perhaps 4 schools if you do the timing right. You would have to do like Duke-->CCNMPN --> GULC --> UVA getting declined down the line based on their various deadlines and turnaround times. You can't have more than one ED out at a time is the issue

What do you mean by a "15 day turnaround"?

Also, I noticed Cornell has EA. What's the difference?

They will give you a decision within 15 days. If that decision is deny or rollover to the regular admissions pool, you can ED somewhere else.

EA gives you a quick decision but it is not binding.

Just so your clear, UVA is the only t14 to my knowledge to gurantee a 15 day ED decesion. But if I recall directly all schools that have ED have a said date, though not as quick, as to when decesion is made (be it that may mean moving you to regular decesion mind you)

Some people will get scholarships from ED, but with most ED applicants having borderline numbers and no leverage it's rare. Of course schools will always tell you that they evaluate ED people the same way as RD people when it comes to schollies. Don't buy it. The important thing to remember is that in most cases an ED app means you expect to pay sticker. If any money comes your way it's just gravy.
