George Washington University with an Engineering Degree
My UGPA is complete shit (2.2) in Civil Engineering. Assuming I can do well enough on the LSAT to get a decent offer to GW, is there any point since I'm not EE/CS and my UGPA is awful? I've heard that a lot of IP firms check your UG transcript. Could great grades in law school help overcome that? Or even if I'm top 10% will my shitty UGPA stop me from gaining employment? I have plans to pass the Patent Bar, but am unsure as to whether it would be worth it. I know it'll look better on the resume, but who knows.
I've taken some time off, worked on a 6 month construction project, and have taught English in South Korea for one year, with plans to teach one more year before applying this upcoming cycle. I was really unmotivated in undergrad, and had a lot of personal things that affected me (not going into details). Any help with whether going to GW for IP would be worth it (All CoA aside)
Thanks.

As the biggest GW IP fanboy on this site, my usual answer is that you're good to go with GW/Engineering. However, civil engineering is not the hottest field in IP, and your GPA is pretty rough. I had a pretty bad UG GPA (just a couple points higher than yours), and I had no issue getting a job coming from GW, but I'm EE/CS.
So sadly, I'd say that most of that weighs against you. I'm certain it can be done, but you just don't see many civil engineers in the patent field. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

There's a lot of things going against me, mainly wrong engineering and absurdly low gpa. I went to undergrad at Auburn University, which is notorious for having harsh grades, on top of the ridiculous grading for a lot of the engineering classes.sky7 wrote:As the biggest GW IP fanboy on this site, my usual answer is that you're good to go with GW/Engineering. I don't expect to work at a tippy top boutique doing big prosecution or anything like that. I guess what I'm mainly asking is whether or not being patent bar eligible would go a long way as far as getting better employment. To be honest, I'm open to a lot of different career paths. Whether it be Environmental, Construction, IP, Corporate, etc.

WAR DAMN EAGLE!
My wife went there and did engineering, actually, so I know all about it.
Listen, there are plenty of people in patent prosecution that work somewhat out of their areas of expertise. I do mechanical stuff all the time. I think it's for certain that you are amplifying your options by going to GW, but I would hustle super hard to try to land a patent job from the start. You wont be able to wing it like the rest of the IPSECURE crowd.

War Damn Eagle indeed, that's awesome your wife went there. What year did she graduate? I'm May 2010
I just have this image of being qualified law school grade wise, but seeing their jaws drop at my UG transcript with all the C D Fs on there. Are there any law firms that you know of that don't put too much emphasis on engineering grades and specialty and focus more on Law School grades? That would be nice

Well, it didn't happen to me, but I'm not certain about the rest of the IP community. I got the interview, sent them my UG transcripts waiting for them to freak, and they never did.

So AFTER the interview, they asked to see your UG and Law School transcripts and everything ended up alright? That makes me feel slightly better haha.

exact same thing happened to me. a firm asked for ugrad transcripts after my callback... i sent mine in (~3.2) expecting them to drop me from consideration. got an offer a week later.
