Northwestern Interview on Thursday, any advice?

Postby toddly76 » Mon Feb 20, 2012 11:18 pm

Hello all,

Have my NU evaluative interview on campus on Thursday. Anyone who's gone through one want to give me a heads up on what to expect? Any advice?

169/3.8
5 years out
Masters Degree/Leaving a PhD program
Not much work experience on account of academic work

-What is your least favorite thing about your undergraduate coursework?
-What is the biggest/most important document you have written?
-What is the most difficult decision you have made?
-What is the most significant project you have managed?
-Tell me about the worst boss you have worked for and how you resolved issues.
-How would your professors describe you?
-Why NU?
-Why law school?
-Have you been to Chicago during the winter?
-Why did you choose your undergrad school?
-What would you change about your undergrad experience if you could?
-How will you define success in your career?
-How do you deal with conflict?
-Tell me about your most significant experience speaking in front of other people.
-What would you do if you didn't get into any law schools?
-If you were accepted to all of the schools how would you decide where to go?
-What was your favorite class? What was you most difficult class?
-What do you do for fun?
-What kinds of extracurricular activities were you involved in?
- What do you think is important to being a leader?
- What traits do you have that make you a successful leader?
- Who or what inspired you to attend law school?

Had my on-campus interview a couple of days ago. My experience was the same as most other ones in this thread, except that my interview was weirdly short -- I got asked if I had any questions for the interviewer only fifteen minutes in. Maybe I answered questions too succinctly, /shrug

Questions included:

"How do you like your major?"
"What was your most important leadership experience?"
"What is your greatest contribution to your community?"
"Do you have any regrets from your undergraduate studies?"
"Why law school?"
"Why Northwestern?"
[as a follow-up to my answer to the above, which mentioned the higher median age and emphasis on WE]: "What can you contribute to the atmosphere here, despite the fact that you lack that work experience?"

Good luck!

Emphasize the maturity of going through a PhD program. You've been working with old guys for like 5 years now I'm sure. Make it seem like the equivalent of full time work.

I really wouldn't sweat it too much. I was nervous about my interview but it ended up being a very informal experience. Basically talked through the resume, and got a handed a few "so why law school now" type questions and that sort of thing.

My interviewer was in house counsel for AT&T and seemed to want to talk about himself a great deal. My advice would be to do a little research on who you are going to be speaking to. Emphasize the academic experience which is PHENOMENAL for NU. Best of Luck.
